I want to take my dog with me to Quetico in September and want to make sure I have what I need to get her over the border and back again. I have the impression in my mind that I just need a vaccination listing from my Vet to show she is current for rabies. Is this enough?
Thanks, Sunnybear

Yep, just shot records. Mine has been to Quetico five times now, and no one has ever asked to see her papers on either side of the border.

I believe you're also supposed to have an "ok" list from your vet in addition to the vaccination list. I think they're basically supposed to give the dog a look over and fill out a form saying the dog is healthy and not carrying any diseases or parasites. After being filled out it's only good for a certain number of days.

But like Ranger says I've crossed a few times with my dog and never been asked to show any of her papers, even though I do have them.

I crossed the border about 3 weeks ago with my dog. I found various different listings of what was needed online - some outdated, but found the actual crossing to be uneventful. I did not have any sort of health exam for my dog, but I did make sure I had his current rabies vaccine certificate from my vet, and that that certificate had a reasonable physical description of my dog. I handed it to the border agent along with my passport so am not sure if they would have asked or not. I was just going to Thunder Bay for a day, so they didn't seem very concerned with me.

I did have a conversation with a state park ranger the day before who had mentioned that what is and isn't allowed seemed to change regularly. They pointed out that they had just heard any dog food containing lamb was not allowed (which my food has). Canada customs never asked me about it at the border - just made sure I wasn't leaving anything behind with anyone in Canada. Hope that helps.

I don't believe you need a HC (health certificate) for PET dogs going to/through Canada.....just the official rabies vaccination certificate. If it would be a dog you are selling in Canada, then things change and import rules come into play. Also, no Pit Bulls in Ontario (or Pit Bull "like")

Dog food needs to come across the border in the original packaging. in most cases it wouldn't be an issue, but if you ran into a stickler for the rules.........

and its likely that your dog food will be confiscated on return to the US. Thats happened several times to us. Over our dogs 14 year life she took as many Canadian trips.
So we planned to run out the day of the border crossing back to the US and find a grocery store.

We had no problems going into Canada.

Once the agent was sorrowful and let us keep a can of dog food.

Rabies cert is all that was required. We would just take a copy of her recent vaccination certificate. We have been asked once and reminded collar tags are insufficient
