I just came back from Lower Basswood Falls. I went to escape for a brief time from all that's going on this fall. Read on... NY Times Article

Good article. A well written trip report. Thanks HnD!

Some of my favorite parts of the article: the mention of the Schurkes, the picture of Curtain Falls ( a place I have yet to visit but will do so next year---I'm sure), the description of the tow out on LLC, the use of a term that I've never read before - Vermillion Batholith and the Ojibwe history and artifacts found.

Great article - thanks for sharing. I too just returned from a week spent on Sawbill, Cherokee and Frost Lakes as well as the Frost River. A wonderful trip.

I chuckled when I read the line about the seats of the Suburban feeling so good after the trip. That often strikes me as well after a trip and I've made the same observation numerous times both to my trip mates and in trip reports on this site.

It's currently the most popular article on the NY Times online. Heard about it first from my mother in NY and she also heard friends discussing it and wanting to visit Ely.

I had heard that overall numbers were down this year for the BWCA. Perhaps it was in the neighborhood of 229K? where it is usually 250k or so. This may boost that number in the future but there are arguably many factors that affect how many people come to the boundary waters each year.

HighnDry - is this your write up?

Great article regardless. I really enjoyed reading it.

The article was written by a Times writer, Sara Fox. Someday. I
hope that I could write that well! The photography alone is worth the print space.

You wouldn't want to be anywhere near it when it slapped it's tail. It probably created a mini-tidal wave that would have swamped your boat!
