I'm stalling at work. I don't know why this came to me, but:
A couple of years ago my wife and I slogged our way to Gabi by way of Round Lake. It was a tough day. Upon arriving on Gabi, we scouted a couple of campsites. Rounding a point, we came upon a site with a man, bareass naked, standing in the middle of his campsite. Only my wife in the bow saw him, as he quickly retreated behind his tent for cover before I swung the back of the boat around enough to see him.
We camped across the lake from him. It was a layover day for us, and him too apparently, as he spent the entire day nakedly tending to his camp and fishing from a rocky slope in front of his camp. He was far enough away that we couldn't see intimate anatomical details, though it was clear he wasn't wearing any clothes (lots of shiny whiteness). I didn't consider him an exposer and didn't see any harm in him spending the day without any clothes on, considering we (and the next campsite) was quite a distance away. (In my job as a forensic psychologist, I have worked with a lot of exposers. He wasn't one. Trust me on that.) It was late in the season so there weren't many paddlers going through or camping on the lake.
I thought it was funny. I just consider it "one of those things" that some people do up there. So.... any stories or similar experiences?

Once, about ten years ago, as we entered Adams Lake from Boulder, we encountered someone from this site. He wasn't naked, thankfully, but they told us there was a woman on the island ahead who was. Alas, by the time we paddled by there was no such sight to see.

I've seen a few naked folks in the BWCA over the years. I've been naked a few times too, matter of fact, there was a midnight skinny dip on my last trip that I remember to be very invigorating.
I would not walk about camp naked during daylight hours, but that is just me.

Sometimes I like to paddle slowly close to the shoreline and look at rocks and vegetation up close. I've come upon campsites unnoticed to the occupants a few times. Some people are a little shocked when I appear so near and think I'm a Ranger or Conservation Officer because I wear an olive drab PFD and kaki shirt.
Once though I came across a gentleman who appeared to be in his early 70's standing au natural in the campsite. My first impression was that he had no tan lines and his skin looked like Jack Link's beef jerky with gray fuzz stuck to it. He was very thin and I was close enough to see that he was uncircumcised. I'm a regular guy who finds looking at naked men uncomfortable but, like a car wreck I couldn't turn away. He just said "howdy" and walked toward the firegrate.
I also saw a male and female couple making love in broad daylight on the Magnetic Rock Trail a few years ago but they weren't naked all the way.

I came across a naked man bathing at the Murdo EP a few years back while I was crossing over it to Picket Lake with 2 other women. I was headed right to where he was with my canoe. I didn't know he was there until I tipped the canoe up and lo and behold - he was in my line of site. I quickly dropped the canoe back to eye level and shouted - "woman on the premise" and slowed down. He scrambled while his buddies had a great laugh at his expense. I had to set the canoe down right where he was and by then, thankfully, he was dressed. Made for interesting conversation for the both of us.

[MN DNR Conservation Officer] Fagerman: “My take is that the Boundary Waters is a public place, and being naked in public is unlawful. It would depend on the situation, but if someone was trying to be discreet and trying to bathe or something, an officer could use discretion. If someone is trying to be an exhibitionist, they will either be arrested or get a citation for anything from disorderly conduct, indecent exposure, or possibly even a degree of sexual assault. People have to remember that there are a lot of youngsters out there canoeing, and a parents shouldn’t have to deal with their children seeing someone naked.”
According to [Wilderness operations leader for the Superior National Forest Gunflint District Cathleen] Quinn, it is prohibited to be publicly nude at developed recreation sites within the Superior National Forest. Developed recreation sites include BWCAW campsites, portages, portage landings, and hiking trails. That leaves a certain gray area open to activities such as nude swimming or canoeing, though again, “respect” is probably the key word here.

Fishing on Alpine one morning back in the '90's we came around a point and surprised a couple skinny-dipping. The jumped out and ran up to their tent, although; we would have seen a LOT less had they just stayed there (LOL)! I remember it was September and a very cool morning and I thought they were some tough hombres to be skinny dipping THAT morning!

We passed some people swimming in the middle of the afternoon once. They seemed like something was up but stayed in the water the whole time. We talked later that they may have been naky naky but don't know. It was two couples so... I'm not saying, just saying.

Whatever trips your trigger. I've skinny dipped plenty of times over the years but since I'm usually with a group of guys, it's not something we do as a group. When one is tripping solo or with a willing travel companion, there certainly would be a high level of freedom in enjoying the sun and balmy breezes au natural.

I've/We've seen a few, mostly topless women if that counts. We've seen a pair of couples running around naked on a site mid afternoon, they covered themselves when they seen us but let it fly as soon as we were a ways away. Group of mid 40's gals in their undies and laundry hanging all over the site. We joked they'd been there a while and ran out of clean clothes. Few couples skinny dipping. I think it happens more then people think. Also never thought about kid factor and being exposed to that. We'll clean up after about 4 days but are discrete, don't want to scare anyone.

An old friend of mine has a farm in Florida, on which he dug a fair sized fish pond. Along one side of the pond he planted a number of berry bushes.
It was common for the farmer to visit the pond on a daily basis with a small bucket to pick berries. One day while strolling from his house down the path to the pond, he rounded the corner leading to his dock where he noticed a pile of clothing and observed several young ladies who were happily skinny dipping.
Once they saw him they hurriedly scurried over to the far side of the pond and began berating him for being a dirty old man just wanting to see naked young women.
Being the gentleman that he was he replied to the young ladies protests that he wasn't at all interested in seeing them naked, at which point he raised his bucket and stated........"I just came down to feed the alligator."
I'll let you imagine what happened next.

On our May trip this year, we basecamped on site 1464 on Knife Lake. We were trolling for lakers headed towards site 1463 and noticed a middle-aged guy hanging out on top of a rock. As we approached, when we were close enough to tell that he was wearing a towel, he proceeded to drop the towel and reveal his nakedness before jumping in (the water was around 52 degrees!). He casually climbed back out of the water, back up the rock and seemed to be in no hurry to wrap the towel back around himself. We just kept on fishing and pretty much ignored him. When we got back to camp, we related the story to the other two guys that were with us, and they said he did the same thing when they paddled by! Kinda creepy...

Hope this is not creepy,
I live off grid with solar panels and no running water.
Here is a pic of my shower. One can guess what I wear when I shower.
I have to keep my shower near the lake because I fill the barrel with water from the lake.
I have never had any complaints from my neighbors, and I would never shower if someone was on the lake. My nearest neighbor across the lake is over 1,000 feet away. I don't think I have ever seen them relaxing in their yard facing the lake.

Skinny dipping is a pretty normal thing on many of my trips when its just me and the wife. How else do you expect to get clean?
Its really not a big deal and we are mindful of canoe traffic and campsite placement. We've been at sites where we just couldn't do it due to being too close to others but other sites its pretty easy to be discreet.
We've only had one close call in terms of being seen. We were wind bound for a day mid trip which was fine with us. We hadn't seen a single canoe on the water all day because it was a steady 20+ mph wind with gusts much higher. We took the lull in traffic as a chance to skinny dip and clean up a little. Well wouldn't you know it we get out in the water and maybe 5 minutes later we see a canoe rounding the point down from the site. It was still a little ways off but close enough they might have a good idea what was going on. We got behind some rocks and climbed out. I had shorts close by so threw those on quick and the wife ran for the tent. Turns out the canoe was 2 forest service guys checking permits and campsites. So they paddled right up to camp and asked to come ashore. I'm pretty sure they knew we were skinny dipping but they pretended not to notice. They did ask permission to go back to the latrine which would have brought them by the tent where the wife was hiding. All in all it was no big deal, more of a funny story to tell.
As long as people aren't being creepy about it and intentionally exposing themselves for some sort of thrill I don't have a problem with people being naked in the BWCA. Its easy enough to be discreet and you can usually see people coming from a way away so if they do see you there is enough time to get covered up before they get a good look.

most notable incidents:
about 7 years ago while heading into big Sag I encountered a couple of lovely ladies sunbathing bare assed and topless
there are probably Rovers on this board, back in the early 80' on a trip everyone went skinnydipping, cold water has an effect on both men & women, things that sag and droop tend to withdraw closer to the body :)
I came across a couple embracing nude in the St. Croix, I was paddling upstream, they were vigilant of anyone coming downstrem, when they noticed me they scampered into the woods, the woman faster than the guy, she had a nice pair

ok I wasn't really skinny dipping/swimming. I was just wading near shore naked and only in about halfway, just to get a good rinsing with a soap-free washcloth. Refreshing.

I trip solo and prefer not to see other people. For that reason I try to bathe naked as little as possible because it's almost a sure fire bet that as soon as I strip down and start to get in the water a canoe will come around the corner.

While in the BDub, I shower with a sun shower every night. The shower is set up in the woods, but I always get wet at the lake so save time and water, the soap and rinse under the shower. As such, I'm naked for 10 or so minutes at dusk between the lake and the shower. Obviously I have to adjust my behavior based on adjacent campsites (very rare) or evening paddlers and fishermen (occasional). Being in the woods naked is a wonderful feeling, and I can understand why campers would like it and would want to do more of it....outside of bug season, of course.

I believe in conserving weight on canoe trips. Therefore, no swimming suit. The only times I have ever brought a swimming suit are when I am camping with my son. Other times with couples, no suits for any of us. Works for me, and that goes back to the 1980's. Being in the buff seems to scare off or delay the permit checkers. Had a male-female permit checker/campsite checker event a few years ago, and they waited until I slapped on a t-shirt, which covered up most of the unmentionables. I think they were embarrassed. I was mostly em-bare-assed, even with the t-shirt.

Naked in the relative privacy of your own campsite, or swimming, no problem. I don't think skinny dipping or enjoying nature in the buff is uncommon. Intentionally exposing oneself when people paddle by, naked on a trail or at a portage is a different story; that would be creepy.
I have come across skinny dippers in hot springs in New Zealand, and done my fair share in very private and remote locations.

In the BWCA, it wouldn't bother me if my kids saw people naked - wouldn't traumatize them at all. Most stories above are simply people enjoying the outdoors and being human. Hundreds of trips and don't ever recall wearing a swimsuit. Who wants a wet suit to haul around, much less a towel. We always skip the suit and air dry. Almost always in the Q but our pattern is the same if we are in the BW, just a little more watchful. I have never understood this modesty thing when no one but your group is around.

Missing my normal October trip (work and a funeral), I jumped at the chance to go in November (first solo, too). Went in on the November 5th and it was an unbelievably calm day.
Paddled in about ten miles. I saw and talked to a guy who was on his way out and had not seen anyone in four days. When I got to the site I was aiming for and realized how alone I really was, I gave some au naturel a try. Did most of my set up and then enjoyed a very incredible long weekend, but only one day of au naturel. It was actually very comfortable.
It was so quiet I would have heard a paddle splash from a mile away.

A few years back we were camped on the land site across from the island sites on Ester. 2 couples set up on Easterly site on the island beings they paddled right past us we made the assumption they saw us. We decided to fish that evening. As we turned the corner the lady’s were in the raw catching some rays. We were shocked they were shocked!! They jumped up and ran towards there tents. We just paddled across the lake to go fishing. As we were fishing we saw them paddling away from there site. On our return trip we made sure to circle around. But they had evacuated and moved on. It was almost dusk when they left. We joked about how that conversation went. We’re leaving, we just got here it’s almost dark, we’re leaving .

I did the last stretch of the Delehey Death March naked, in mid June, with no bug spray.
My buddies kept fearing the portage. So I started saying, '"I'm doing it naked !"
They would laugh....well...
They were ahead of me, each with a pack, as I lagged behind with a pack and canoe.
A ways down the trail I stripped naked except for my boots, and stashed all clothes in my pack.
As I approached the end of the portage, with bugs all over me, I was singing "Lady Godiva", by Peter & Gordon.
My buddies fell apart, but managed a few snapshots.
Years later, in the mail, I got this made up fake newspaper bit about Pervert Sighted in Quetico, complete with picture (It's funny and if I get a chance to post it, I will).
Side note.... It was in the middle of Quetico.... kind of remote & if I had heard any women or kids coming, I'd have ditched into the woods.

I guess I personally don't get the appeal of even wanting to do it outside of a joke like Stumpy. I also don't really care as long as you know when my kids come around the corner that they try to get out of sight or cover up.

yellowcanoe: "Why is nudity such a big deal?
Euros do it as a matter of factly..
To them its not a big deal.. and they aren't trying to show off."
That's what I was thinking. We have a funny attitude about the human body in this country, which, in turn, creates more curiosity, rather than less.

I grew up with 12 siblings, 2 bathrooms, a shower and a bathtub.
Nudity was never a big deal when I was a kid. Of course we didn’t parade around the house” nekked ya all. “
I just would feel sorry for the poor person that would come upon me skinny dipping. They might be scarred for life with psdtd. (post skinny dipping traumatic stress disorder)!!!

Not in the bdub, but years ago was sitting in a sauna at a hotel in Germany with my 14 yr old son in our bathing suits. Two girls, early twenties and completely naked, walked in and sat down. We stayed a few minutes and went out to the pool to swim. Shortly after, they came swimming, too. The next morning about 5:30am, he woke up my wife and me because he wanted to go swimming.

Funny story. Having seen some scantily clad to fully naked Euros at a beach in Mexico, I can attest they are not shy about being undressed in public, but it's kinda one of those things you can't unsee. I mean, at least have a decent body shape if you are going to show it off. Yuk!

I grew up with six in a 3 bedroom house with one bathroom. My brother and I used the basement laundry tub for for our morning bathroom. We even kept our tooth brushes down there. Now I live in a house with 2 3/4 bathrooms for 2 people, it almost seems decadent.

I read this entire thread just waiting to be one of the people "spotted" nekkid. We swim naked, hang out naked, sunbathe naked, fish naked :D BWCA time is nekkid time. If I see a boat with like a family in it, and we're out fishing (topless), sure, I'll grab a shirt or towel, but I'm not super concerned with someone seeing me. :D

We generally trip in late Sept. or early Oct, so being hot isn't a problem. My first hot-weather trip was 95+ and before our mid-afternoon nap I decided to swim to cool off, a BWCA first for me.
I went in with all my clothes on to rinse the grime out. Since we were on a secluded site and hadn't seen someone go by in two days, I decided to dry my clothes and nap naked. Our clothes line was over a rock right by the water and I laughed how funny it would be for a canoe to come by. Nothing is sexier than a naked man in Tevas.
I went back to my tent and not 5 minutes later I hear someone yelling and asking for permission to come into camp. A male/female ranger canoe had pulled up and wanted to inspect, another BWCA first for me.
The only thing that would have saved me is the reflection off my pale ass would have blinded them from half a mile away.
