I just registered my canoe in Wisconsin so that I can take it to BWCA.

Wisconsin doesn't require canoe registration, but so that I wouldn't need MN registration, I registered it. All boats that are registered in WI need to have the 3 inch high numbers on the bow, forward of the registration sticker like this: WS 1234 NK.

But my little boat doesn't HAVE to be registered in Wisconsin at all. So my question is:
Do I have to put the 3 inch numbers on my canoe or not???

I never have......Just put the reg sticker on. Wi doesn't care.....MN does, but only the sticker. Now, if you ever put a motor on it in WI, then yes to the numbers.

Thanks Doc,

That's what I'm planning on doing. All of those big numbers and letters on my little solo canoe would look like hell.

You can select Non-Motorized Voluntary on the WI form, no numbers issued just the sticker.

you only have to put numbers on it if you are going to use a motor on it. So far wisconsin is voluntary as someone said. So far the 3 year voluntary sticker to go to Mn and Iowa is a bargain.

I think if you put a motor on it than it has to have numbers in Minnesota?

Good to know, I'll hold off putting the 150 HP Johnson on my Vagabond until I get those numbers.

MO also doesn't require licensing unless it's motorized. Costs more to register a canoe here than, MN, so I always do MN and just slap a sticker on:
