Depending on ice out, I'm planning on heading up the last weekend of April for a week. I can use the self issue permit since it's prior to May 1st, but since I will be in the wilderness when permit season starts do I need another permit for that time, or will I be good with the self issued?

Nope - just make sure you do the self-issue and carry your part with you in case you get checked, but I really don't think the Rangers will be out much. You might see the DNR, so pay attention to the fishing regs.
