I assume you have good maps. If not, get some. After you portage Lower Basswood Falls, head down Crooked Lake. You will see one of the best displays of pictos about a mile below the falls on a big cliff face on your left. Lots of good fishing in the currents and narrows. Take your time if fishing is on the menu. Most boys love fishing. At Wednesday bay you will find Table Rock campsite, an historic meeting place during voyaguers days. Thursday and Friday bays have some great campsites and offer more good fishing. At the south end of Friday is a portage route heading to Gun, Fairy, and Boot to Fourtown, good fishing in all those lakes, before winding up at Mudro.

You'll be going up the Horse River. The current isn't the issue rather it's the rocks and little rapids that may be tough to paddle through. It all depends on the water level at the time. Plan on doing some portages that may not be on your map.

What are typical levels on Horse river?

Sounds good. Last time I was going west (downstream) along the falls we camped just above the upper falls. Quite a few decent sites there and then you're well rested for the portage. Campsites can fill up fast near the lower falls. You'll be going upstream on the Horse river to get to Mudro. Ease of that section depends on water levels.

We are planning on going all the over to Lower Basswood Falls and down the Horse River through Horse Lake and Tin Can Mike Lake. We have a week on the water. Planning on getting up to Basswood Lake first day.

How far are you going down the Basswood river? Very cool area. The portage around the upper falls is looong but very flat and well traveled. If you stay left at every fork you'll put in below all the danger areas. Some spurs off to the right are campsites, viewing spots of falls, fishing spots, etc. If you're pressed for time, land at the top of upper falls to see them. Then go to Mudro via Jackfish Bay and Sandpit.

Planning a trip in July with scouts. Starting at Entry point 24 and ending at entry point 23. Had questions and concerns about the portages around Basswood falls and campsite suggestions. The day we are going the lake will be busy. Will take all tips and suggestions into consideration.
