Moose on Big Moose?

heavylunch	09/04/2018 07:16AM Portages were fine. Only difficult spot in my opinion is going into Big Moose on the 160 rod portage the landing is a bit muddy and shallow. Not surprising this time of year but not really a problem either given it is the BWCA. There was only 1 beaver dam to pull over between the 160 and the 60 rod portage and it is just your typical BWCA beaver dam about 2 feet tall maybe? Obviously if it is wet out be careful on the portages as the exposed rocks and tree roots can get pretty slippery. I think there was one tree across the 160 rod portage but I was able to fairly easily step over it. The portage to Cummings lake had 8-10 trees across it and some would be quite difficult to navigate over/around with a heavy pack and/or a canoe. By the way, we didn't see any moose but the trees were already starting to change colors and there were plenty of fallen leaves decorating the portage trails. Enjoy!

mvillasuso	08/30/2018 10:12PM Been there numerous times in the last 2 years. There is A LOT of sign in the woods surrounding the lake, and I suspect they enjoy the extensive network of marshes that are beyond line-of-sight from the lake, and can easily remain off the main lake.

TuscaroraBorealis	08/30/2018 10:49AM Seen a small bull moose the last time we stayed there. Although that was about 6 years ago. More recently, weve done a few day trips to Big Moose and have always see moose tracks on the beach. (The beach is the start of the portage to Duck Lake).

heavylunch	08/29/2018 09:41AM I remember the days no so long ago when we would see multiple moose on nearly every trip into the BWCA. On my last 4 or 5 trips I haven't seen any. Will be going into Big Moose this weekend and wondered if anyone has seen Moose there recently? The last moose I saw was on Basswood with 2 calves about 5 years ago. I looked at the "Moose" survey put out by the DNR and it looked like just southwest of Big Moose was a good possibility but I don't think we are planning to go there. My 5 year old has yet to see a Moose in the BWCA on her 2 visits so far.
