Very Heavy. I did not know you Kanoes, but knowing what I know now, I found this extremely moving. Godspeed... calm waters.

Late to the party here- haven't read trip reports for a while. Yours was sooo nice!!! Made me really envious as I miss the Quetico a lot. My body won't let me trip like that any more. Glad you had the experience and that it was a good one. And, thanks for the pictures!
kanoes 10/13/2009 09:55PM
thanks for all the wonderful comments. that trip changed me in a great way.
Mongo65 10/13/2009 06:03PM
Great report Kanoes. I'm glad that you shared it.

Seeking a break in my day, I thought "haven't read a BW trip report for a long time," remembered you had done a Queti-solo and how much I always enjoy your witty quips; sure enough your tr was full of them. Your attitude and sense of humor, as well as your skills really shine through in your report. Loved the descriptions of the land/lake scape, and also your descriptions of what you were thinking along the way. thanks,

Karen

Thanks for sharing.

Lunched on your Kash island site in 2008---after chasing a bear away :) Glad he did not give you any trouble :)

You always make solo tripping very attractive! (no skinny dipping pun intended)

K, I have enjoyed this trip report more than anyone I've read for awhile. It made me want to be there, except for the nudity.
You have rekindled my desire for a solo possibly next year....thanks!

Trix 09/23/2009 05:35PM
Thanks for sharing Jan! After reading your & Lisa's reports on your solos, it does make me want to do another solo next year. Maybe a little farther & longer than the one I had this year. Great pictures as well!
mr.barley 09/23/2009 05:17PM
Nice report, kanoes. Hope it was all you dreamed it would be.
oldgentleman 09/23/2009 12:12PM

Way to go Jan - great report and photos....well done trip :)
Amok 09/22/2009 09:58PM
Nice report, it makes me want to go solo NOW.
GraniteCliffs 09/22/2009 08:39PM
A most enjoyable report. Your trip sounded terrific. I have been on your route within the last year or two on different trips and had an easy time imagining the portages, lakes and campsites. The Grey Lake portage tricked me once years ago and again just 6 years ago.
We took the Trant portage you described from the other directions several weeks ago--thankfully I had read about it in a report and knew what to expect.
Your solo perspective was interesting. I went solo 35 years ago and will be going again in ten days so your comments in regard to solo travel were much appreciated.
Thanks for writing the report.
gutmon 09/22/2009 01:19PM
cool report. Well done.

Atta boy K, well done.
kensofe 09/22/2009 06:50AM
Nicely done, Jan! I enjoyed your report and your pictures. It seems you are really developing a rhythym for the solo trek- congratulations! Great report!
TomT 09/22/2009 06:48AM
Nicely done! Sounds like you had a good experience. Great weather and some adventure thrown in.

Seems like you didn't fish any though. Also, what was your footwear? How was your packing this time? (overpack any?)
overthehill 09/21/2009 11:34PM
Thanks K. Very cool. Neat how you ran into HPD too.
kanoes 09/21/2009 10:29PM
thanks for all the kind words.

ho ho? i did know what to expect on that portage, thanks to a kevin callan book.

swimming never crossed my mind. as usual, many things never cross my mind.

:)
Ho Ho 09/21/2009 09:28PM
Nice! Great route. Great experience. Had you heard about "Boggy Portage" before your trip? That's the one between Unnamed and Grey. The site of my most Twilight-Zone-esque experience ever in the Q. Glad you came through it okay. Seems like the portages from Kahsh through Trant to Silence (the only part of your route I have not been on) were a lot tougher.

It was very warm up there this September, wasn't it? We came out more or less the same day you went in. We went for a swim morning and evening just about every day. If you really want to be refreshed, I recommend really getting in the water. It's awesome! (Swim shoes recommended.)
Franzenrp 09/21/2009 08:34PM
Jan,

Nice report, nice picture, and nice trip. Glad you had a great time !
snakecharmer 09/21/2009 08:01PM
Excellent report Kman. Great pictures too. Sounds like you had nice weather...a little too nice. I hear you about the warm temps. Both my trips this year (June and August) the temps were in the 80's and lotsa sunshine! Thanks for posting the report. I enjoyed it very much.
Boppa 09/21/2009 07:46PM
kanoes,
What a nice achievement, well stated with some fine pictures.Your personal remarks make it an enjoyable read. I will be visiting your photo album.

dogwoodgirl 09/21/2009 07:43PM
great report....makes me yearn for that next solo!
bojibob 09/21/2009 07:20PM
Congratulations Jan!
Last night I told you that you were my hero.
Tonight I will tell you why.

For a man or woman to enter a true wilderness alone.....

Your only means of survival on your back....

Your transportation is primitive by today's standards and powered by you alone......

Potential dangers everywhere consisting of wind, waves, leg snapping boulder trails, body sucking mud sink holes...and of course the Bears and the Wolves....

Your only defense....Brains, Strength and Courage.

You came back fully intact and a better man than the one that left many days before.

You have now entered into a world very few have... many ask "Can I do it?" You can sit and smile say "I have done it"

Well done Jan.
rlhedlund 09/21/2009 07:03PM
Glad you had a great time in the woods and on the water. Sounds like it was a tad warm out there.
dalet 09/21/2009 06:47PM
Great trip, great trip report....you should be very proud of this accomplishment.
Kiporby 09/21/2009 06:45PM
Nicely done my friend. You are totally hooked on the Quetico now, aren't you?

Can't wait to see that perdy Magic in action next year. Will you let me kick the tires? Haha.
Mort 09/21/2009 06:43PM
Thanks Kanoes for a both insightful and entertaining report on your trip. You have a fun way of expressing yourself. Some dang nice pictures also. I felt like I experienced the trip along with you.
aebrooks 09/21/2009 06:34PM
Very nice. Glad you had a safe and successful trip.
cowdoc 09/21/2009 04:24PM
nojo....it's the "carpet" of logs laid across a muddy or boggy spot.
cowdoc 09/21/2009 04:21PM
Nicely done k. Glad the trip went well.
nojobro 09/21/2009 04:16PM
Ooh, do I get the first comment? ;-)

Sounds like a really great trip! What marvelous weather...I'm so jealous!

What does this mean? "Careful balancing and foot shuffling on corduroy was necessary." Corduroy?
