01/06/2013 08:42AM Empire Wool & Canvas makes great gear that will last if taken care of. They have a new anorak that is fairly priced. It is called the Snowshoe Hare, very basic but well built, as noted before...you get what you pay for! CC |

01/06/2013 12:01AM Check out Burton gear. My go to "cold weather work hoodie" is Burton. It's wind/water resistant. lightweight and warm. |

01/05/2013 11:15PM How much is not breaking the bank? I would maybe try a mititary surplus store first. |

01/05/2013 06:03PM Empire Canvas has a couple of options but are pricey. You get what you pay for. A very inexpensive option are the military snow parkas. Check sprotsmansguide.com, they have a few different kinds. |

01/05/2013 04:48PM For the past 30-plus years my winter camping outer layer has been unlined Woolrich Mountain Parkas, made from 60/40 cloth (60% cotton, 40% nylon). I have replaced these several times over the years as they have worn out, fallen apart, and become filled with spark holes. My problem is: these 60/40 mountain parkas are now almost impossible to find and most outer shells are now nylon or nylon/Gore-tex--very expensive stuff to wear while hanging out near a fire on long winter evenings. So, what are my options? Who makes a simple, hooded shell that breaths well, is rugged enough for winter tripping, but won't break the bank? |
