04/20/2008 12:30AM wkdoit, Those are not very good touring lakes that you mentioned. Portages are crummy, lakes small, yuck. (trust me!!!) It is not, a nice little loop. You're better off going to Little Crab, and going either left (to Lunetta) or right (to Korb/Cummings)and making a route in those areas. The "wolves" people hear in that area could very well be sled dogs at the extreme end of Burntside, which is very near that area. |

04/19/2008 09:43PM wkdoit, we went to that loop of lakes in early September 2006. I posted a report on another site. Here is a link to the last entry of the report. At the top of that entry are links to all the previous days. (Note - it takes a while for the pictures to download in each entry, so be patient. Every once in a while it stalls loading, so hit refresh if that happens.) We traveled from Crab through the loop of little lakes back to Crab on Days 2-5 (if you read the whole report you'll see why it took a while). As you guessed, we had total solitude. The only other people we saw were on Clark Lake on our way back to Crab - they were in from Crab to fish for the day. Wolves howled very nearby every day. I can't advise on fishing, but my sense is that these are not fishing destination lakes. In fact they are small, ugly, stinky, with lots of portages for just a little paddling, rough campsites . . . I like them. Have fun. |

04/19/2008 09:01PM wkdoit, I am trying to put the finishing touches on our 2007 trip out of Crab lake but did travel in another direction than you are interested in, I will try to finish it this week. 04/19/2008 06:18PM Does anybody have any info on lakes off the southwest arm of crab lake.There seems to be a nice little loop of small lakes-clark,battle,hassel are 3 of 8 available.Probably not great fishing.Furtman says np,lb,bg only on most lakes,but those are all the natives right?I'm thinking september trip to this area and I'm also thinking not much company will be around.I don't see these lakes mentioned in any guide books and late sept is usually quieter in general.Solitude anyone? |
