09/24/2015 06:30AM TomT I did not find either my pocket saw or my head net. I did have short periods where bugs were a problem but not much. Creeks are always a place where there are more likely to be bugs and Allen creek is the only place where I used the head net on the trip. The Placid Rapid Fire is an outstanding canoe. The Magic is a very good canoe and will handle a much bigger load. I do not need to carry more than the Rapid Fire will handle and the smaller boat is easier to handle and faster on the water and it is much lighter making portaging easier. I believe the Rapid Fire is more delicate than the Magic. My bedroom is under a Super Fly and it is a Warbonnet Black Bird. I have a ¾ length UQ and a full length UQ protector. The protector does a good job of closing up gaps and helps keep my bottom side warm but weighs almost nothing. To keep the UQ and protector up tight on the hammock they are suspended from prusiks hung from the tarp continuous ridge line. The best I can say about the fishing is the little northern were hungry and not afraid something bigger would spoil their meal. quote bfurlow: "That was a good read. Makes me jealous! 09/23/2015 09:50PM Nice report MP. Kudos to you for sticking with it solo and making the bushwhack. Sounds like it was a doozy. Did you find your dropped items on the way off the lake? How are the bugs at that time of year? You didn't mention them much. Also, looks like a new very light boat you have. How do you like it compared to the Magic? Also, is that Warbonnet gear you're using? And did you take bottom insulation? I kinda wish these jamborees were every other year and maybe one in september when I could make it. Also, I gotta ask more about the fishing on the selected lake. You mention northerns - anything worth telling? I really enjoyed the pics too. It looks like you experienced a lot of different weather over two weeks. As it should be. |

09/23/2015 06:47AM Walley13 Thanks for reading. I guess I am a genuine tender foot. I have had blisters on almost every trip for several years. I have been wearing 2 sets of socks with the inner one being thin slick sock the outer one being a smart wool. I switched to 2 thin socks and that is what worked the best. |

09/22/2015 11:28PM MP, Great read. Nice photo's too. I like the pic of your bushwhack camp with the "pink flamingo" watching over your campsite. Hey one idea that may help you prevent blisters from forming on your feet is to use 2 sets of socks. I like to use a real thin Coolmax poly sock next to feet and then a pair of Smartwool socks over the thin layer. Wearing 2 pairs reduces friction and means fewer blisters. You will have to make sure that you have enough room in your boot to accommodate 2 layers of socks. My old track coach from high school had runners that had blister problems smear their feet bottoms and toes with Vaseline and I have to say it worked well. I have used this Vaseline trick several times over the years when doing long hikes in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Seems crazy but it does work. |
