I've used them for lake trout up there with spoons. We start by dropping the rig in the water after you're moving some. Back reel counting the number of rotations. With 2 people in the boat, we might start with one person at 20 cranks and the other at 25. After a while, 20 goes to 30, then 25 to 35 etc until you find the proper depth, then target that depth.
If the 2 reels are different sizes, on shore, strip off a equal amounts of line on both, then count the rotations and work out a ratio so you can target similar depths.
