Looking for suggestions on a new trip from Saganaga entry point. We went in 2022 and got towed to American Point and explored the Esther/Hanson/Knife. It was a great trip, and we're looking for something similar but new. We really enjoyed using Voyageur Canoe Outfitters for their bunks and tows.

Has anyone tried a different tow point from Sag and would recommend? Looks like a lot of the options are in Quetico, which we've never done. So I would also take suggestions on the whole going into Canada process.

Thanks!

Andy

Entering Canada via lake requires the RABC permit (start here) by which you send your passport info to the Canadian government in advance of your trip. If the trip is family, you can cover family members on a single permit. If non-family members are joining you, they must apply for their own RABCs.

Then you get your Quetico permit (here). by selecting an entry ranger station (probably Cache Bay) and an entry lake. The Ontario Parks site is a bit cumbersome to navigate. It seems focused on car camping, etc., rather than canoeing, but if you keep punching Quetico and canoe buttons, you'll get to the interior permits.

Hope it's a great trip--winter planning is half the fun.

We've always used Seagull Outfitters for our tow to Hook Island heading to Quetico and I highly recommend them.

TZ covers and is right on with his comments regarding the permits needed. Be sure to buy your fishing licenses in advance on-line.

The options in Quetico are endless, whether you are looking for a fishing trip, traveling trip, or base-camping. Enjoy the planning! And ask more questions.

If you want to enter off the Gunflint to Quetico, Main options are Man chain or Falls Chain. You didn’t really give a distance. To do a loop is usually some decent mileage requiring a bigger loop though from those entry points.

I’d highly recommend Quetico though!

+1 on Seagull Outfitters. We have used their tows and bunk houses.

+1 on Seagull Outfitters. We have used them for tows and bunks for years. Also a +1 on the Q. If you are comfortable with the same distance you traveled from American Point to Knife there are a lot of cool places you can see in Q.
