We try to plan ahead (not always possible, admittedly) and do our business when we are away from camp out fishing or travelling. If we are camped on an island we will paddle to the mainland, away from other campsites, and hike as far into the bush as possible.

You'd have to put it on a stick and burn it up with your cook stove, Ken ;-)"

I think I'll resort to containment.

Which would indeed be great fun since you just yelled "DUECE IN THE HOLE!!!"

Burning TP out in the woods just seems like a really bad idea...
GraniteCliffs 04/20/2016 11:46AM
Dig deep. Burn hot. Bury well.
Works for me.

Last year I asked park staff if it was "suggestion or rule". I was told quite plainly by rangers last year that burning or packing out was "mandatory" park wide.

It's their park, their rules. Respect and consideration suggests we follow them. Common sense, birch bark and a hot fire make it quick and easy.
old_salt 04/19/2016 02:53PM
Some may be looking for a dual purpose tool. Nothing I've seen can be used as both a latrine/grill.

It so nice now cleaning out the burn pit and getting the foil balls out. Encouraging people to put dirty toilet paper in the cooking heat source is a BAD BAD BAD idea. I will be doing a lot less cleaning fire pits. I will be making my own fire pit somewhere else to cook on. I have seen some toilet paper dug up by something but it is less than 1% of the toilet paper I have seen on the surface of the ground. Most 99% is never berried. "

Agree !......Don't burn....bury it.

I don't own a Purcell grill, but in 2014 we used one. They are very nice, lightweight, and sturdy.
I had a Coghlans folding grill, but it must have found its way to the single sock universe...

+3 on Purcell Trench grills.

+2 squirting some hand sanitizer on toilet paper before burying the destruction.

A little squirt of hand sanitizer on top of the TP gets it burning well...

The trench grill is great but if you are "el cheapo" like me then just find a grill from a cheap small charcoal grill. I am still on my first one and it has been over 30 years.

Looking at this (http://www.quetico100.com/resources/Andrea2015/Wilderness%20Guide%202015.pdf), it doesn't specifically name toilet paper as something that can be buried. However this passage seems to cover it:

Litter: Pack out all non-burnable garbage, including
tinfoil. You may not leave any litter in a Provincial Park,
except in a place designated for that purpose. Likewise,
you must keep your interior campsite clean and sanitary at
all times. This will help prevent problems with bears and
will also help to preserve Quetico’s wilderness.

I'm going to err on the side of TP falling into the category of little, coupled with what the rangers are telling people. I will say that I've seen animals digging up buried TP, and I'll go check for any TP lying around so I can burn it along with whatever TP I'm using (I try to avoid using paper since natural stuff can just be thrown in the cathole). Honestly I kinda wish they'd really go out there and double down on disseminating information online, like having an official site with a concrete set of rules on it. Not everyone is going to know to head to quetico100.com and navigate to the Wilderness Guide on an obscure page. I guess that's why they have people visit the ranger stations, though.
Jackfish 04/03/2016 10:03PM
If I'm wrong, my bad... and my apologies. All the paperwork I've ever seen has said burying, burning or carrying out. Maybe someone can help find a reference.
Ausable 04/03/2016 09:35PM
We were told the same thing 2 years ago. No burying.

quote Jackfish: "quote kscorps: "Please make sure to burn your toilet paper! Burying it isn't enough as animals will dig it up/ it will rise to the surface eventually."

Burying toilet paper using Leave No Trace techniques, burning and carrying out are all accepted methods by Quetico rules."

My understanding is that as of last year official Quetico policy is that TP is to be burned or packed out. The ranger at PP was insistent that this was mandatory and park policy.
kscorps 04/03/2016 06:58PM
The rangers at Prairie told me to always burn TP, but they might just be taking a scorched earth policy on toilet paper since there's so much of it all over some of the popular campsites. I've never been a fan of packing out used TP but that's also another effective way of dealing with it.

Quetico Grill (we brought one, someone had left one)

Quetico Latrine (bring your trowel)
billconner 04/03/2016 03:41PM
You can camp anywhere, but easier and preferred for LNT to use established sites, of which there are a lot.
OldFingers57 04/03/2016 03:23PM
They do have rocks stacked up for a fireplace at most of the established campsites.
kscorps 04/03/2016 02:50PM
Nope, you have to bring a shovel and your own fire grate. Please make sure to burn your toilet paper! Burying it isn't enough as animals will dig it up/ it will rise to the surface eventually. Have fun in Quetico!

I will be on a canoe camping trip to Quetico Park. I wonder if there are latrines & fire grills provided same as BWCA.

Thanks
