Ok this post is old and has been bumped a couple of times so I'm not sure where we are here. Via the towboat it's not even a half hour to American point. Anytime you talk about Sag you have to wonder what the weather is gonna do. It makes all the difference in the world and nobody knows what to expect.

Ok, so the rocks are bad. I also noticed that is seems to be quite some distance to get out to the main lake from the cabins on the river. Can anyone tell me how far it is and how long it takes to get out to there? I'm wondering if Sag would still be a better location to camp with my normal group, rather than bring the family here and stay at a cabin? 2 toddlers and a mom who has never been in the wilderness. Could I take them for a boat ride to the lake or is it too far or too treacherous? Would Seagull lake or Gunflint be a better choice for the family? I'm thinking of a doing a North Shore trip with the family and make this a part of that trip.

Yes, be careful out there, you wouldn't want your prop to look like this!

I have run into them with canoe, I'd be real nervous with motor hanging in the water!!

I think Sag is primarily a walleye, laker lake. They also have bass and northern. Great fishery.

just call voyaguer canoe outfitters directly to talk about their lodging options.

you might research VRBO or Trulia? for private cabin rentals on the Gunflint Trail.
VCO is on the road named Sag Lake Trail.

Not only does the river have some rock hazards, the lake is full of them also.travel with caution, they pop up quick.

Ok, so I guess they have plenty of permits left. Now I'm just looking into where to stay and rent a boat from. Seagull says they only rent boats to cabin patrons which are spendy. I can't find the boats on the voyageur website. I'm gonna keep looking. This does look like a good alternative to Basswood. Could even bring the kids if I get a cabin. So is Sag pretty much all walleye fishing or what? I don't see any Bass or Pike in the Pictures.

I missed out on my motor permit for Basswood too. I've been looking for a group to take me in but this sounds good too. So do they still have overnight motor permits left for Saganaga? Would day use motor permits work better here, 'as in' no portages?

quote bruleman: Go to the Seagull Outfitters website. They rent Lund boats with electric start 25 HP motors, a full day on Sag, for $150. We were fishing Sag a few years ago with a guide and he commented as this boat randomly travelled across the open water, those guys are going to hit some rocks. We then heard the motor accelerate, as they sheared a pin or struck the lower unit in a shallow area.

Thanks for the lead and heads up on the rocks!!

If you do this, they're gonna tell you where the rocks are, I would listen closely. There's one spot in the Seagull River that's pretty tricky, I think it's near the EP sign but don't trust my memory on that.

Looks like Voyageur's does.....$110/day on their website
boat/motor

Does anyone know of an outfitter up near Saganaga Lake that rents out motor boats for overnight camping out on Saganaga? This was the first year in several years that we were not able to get a permit over on Basswood and we are looking at Saganaga as an option. The preference would be that they have 25hp motors also. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
