02/15/2017 09:18AM I have stayed at the island on the far NE end of That Man. You should be able to hang 6 hammocks there. I have not had the privilege of camping on the other sites on the lake, so I cannot give advice about those. You can get there easily from the NE corner of Carp and going through no-name to That Man. You should also be able to hang 6 hammocks on the peninsula site on the south shore of This Man about 1.3 miles from the portage in from No Man. The island site nearby should also accommodate you. I've only stayed once at the eastern-most site on Emerald. You might be able to hang there, but most of the trees are mostly at the periphery of the site, if memory serves me. I'm guessing that you don't want to go as far as Other Man. |

02/13/2017 09:25PM My son and I took another father and son on their first trip to Knife Lake last year. The trip went well, and we are taking another one this year, along with the other father's brother and son. Our plan is a tow to PP, camp a couple nights on Emerald, a couple nights up the Man Chain, and back to Carp for a few nights, 9 days total. Last year I returned to a tent because I wasn't ready to let my 10 year old hang by himself, but I brought my hammock gear. That hammock was in use all week, including at night by the boys. I was miserable back in a tent. Now we will have 6 hammocks and no tents on this trip. I'm nervous. Over the past couple of weeks I have read a bunch of trip reports written about the area. From the pictures of campsites I have seen, Carp has some nice, open sites with lots of hanging options. Beyond Carp, it looks like the terrain changes to more dense cedars where it might be difficult to let us all hang. I know you can hang a hammock pretty much anywhere if you need to, but I'm not one who trims underbrush and branches to create a spot. So, do any of you have enough experience in this area to let me know if the Emerald to Man Chain loop will work for our group with hammocks, or should we basecamp on Carp and day trip to those areas? |
