I am putting together a "mini" songbook with just words and guitar chords. I want to be able to have a list of songs (20-50) that most people (age 40 or 50 to 80) might know or at least know the chorus. The start of my list has some John Denver, P-P-M and a little country , oh, and some old stuff from the 1940's.
I am hoping to have a few post-covid gatherings at my Grand Rapids, MN cabin and this is one of my winter projects to get ready. So - please give suggestions. Lots of suggestions!

I'll start here are you looking for simple 3-4 chord songs?

Here are a few good camp fire songs that never end. I'll add more, they used to call me the human jukebox back in my prime. I could probably play close to 100 songs by the campfire on the guitar. However, the quality of my playing and singing could have been in question.

Leaving on a Jet Plane, and Take me home country roads, John Denver.
The Gambler, Kenny Rogers.

How about this classic
"She'll be coming around the Mountain" is a classic. Anyone can play this song and add any lyrics into the music as they see fit.

"She'll paddling round the river when she comes"
She'll be paddling round the river when she comes. She'll be paddling round the river, when she sees those big white rapids.
She'll be paddling round the river when she comes.

Lori, there are plenty of options in this link, not sure how to help you with the guitar chords but most common ones are probabaly some combinations of these 3-4 chords. G, C, D, A.

Ooooh, just thought of one that is a beautiful song. Tom Petty's Wildflowers.

Got to add that one to your list!

Thanks for the ideas! My list is growing already. I did some on-line research and found this site. Sing Along With Us The site says it will even change the key for you . I usually have to do my own transposing. This could be handy.
I often have to figure out chords on my own or from on-line research. This might be nice if it works.

Sounds like fun, brewing up a sing along. Here's another link to song list, I found it on The Acoustic Guitar Forum, one of the members has been cataloguing songs he's played since '97, has nearly 800 songs, leaning towards Folk, Classic Rock and Classic Country. It's pretty well done, downloadable in a couple of formats, he has also sometimes included links to YouTube videos of the songs being played. It's a nice resource,

Fraxinus, Just did an initial check of the site you posted - WOW, tons of songs! It will take me a while to get through them. My guitar fingers and callouses will get a workout. I might have to plan for a bigger book than originally thought. AND, we might have to have a post Covid "Singin' at the Cabin" weekend!
We could camp, sing, eat, sing, sleep, sing and burn up a ton of wood while sitting around the fire singing. We might even let a few non-musical types come along.
