Does anyone remember their very first catch? What type of fish was it and what size? I can’t remember mine for sure - assuming it was roughly a 1 pound smallmouth; but it could have been an 18 inch pike. Kinda sad I can’t remember 100%. I DEFINITELY remember my first walleye and laker up there though…

Yep...a 4" rock bass! Crab Lake. Still makes me smile thinking about it. :)

I think it was maybe a 6" perch that I caught in a bay on Moose lake after paddling away from the outfitter. Things improved after that for sure!

I think it was a largemouth bass, maybe 12 inches or so, caught in the small unnamed lake just north of Basswood Lake's North Bay.

My first BWCA fish was a 16” smallmouth bass on Saganaga lake from shore of Camper Island about 1986.

A big smallie on Rose Lake in 1998. Didn't measure it but still have the picture!

It was a mess of walleye northeast of campsite 1384 on Disappointment lake between some little rocky islands and shore using a lindy rig with a leech. The funny thing is, I've fished that same area many times since and have never caught another walleye there.

A snot rocket northern at the island campsite on Gaskin was my first.

My most memorable fish was a small lake trout I caught on Fishhook/Earl lake just north of Ted Lake back in 2002. It was the first time I tried to fish for them, wasn’t even sure they existed on that lake. I think it was like 12 inches, but remember being excited to catch a new type of fish.

Catching a species that I’ve never caught before, or even catching a species that is a rare catch (for me), give me an equal or superior euphoria as catching a hog smallie or pike.
