I just bought a new Garmin Oregon 450 from Bass Pro Shops here in Cincinnati. They matched the sale price of $229 from Cabelas (where it was back ordered for weeks). I think I got a good deal, but now this old map & compass guy is feeling like I'm in waaaay over my head. I downloaded Base Camp (thanks to reco's from this string) and now I'm trying to figure out how everything ties in together. I have a trip to WCPP coming up in Aug so I need to get up to speed w/ this gadget. What map package is best to cover WCPP/Quetico/BWCAW? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Some basic suggestions compiled from posts I've made in other gps threads here...

For portage tracks and campsite waypoints:
Go to the Arch Harris page.
Right-click and download the files 'bwca-portage-tracks.gpx' and 'bwca-camp+port-wpt.gpx'
In BaseCamp, import the files. (I personally do not like the fact that the bwca-camp+port-wpt.gpx file includes waypoints for each end of every portage... when you have the portage tracks from the bwca-portage-tracks.gpx file, it seems cluttered and redundant. You can highlight these (the ones with the little airplane icons) in the 'Recently Imported from bwca-camp+port-wpt.gpx' listing and delete.
Connect your handheld to your computer and wait until it shows up under 'My Garmin Devices' in baseCamp.
Highlight desired tracks and waypoints in the 'Recently imported...' folders in 'My Collection' and drag them to the handheld's icon. (You could use the Transfer... Send to Device... menu item but I find dragging and dropping more intuitive.)
Of course, BaseCamp also allows changing track colors and waypoint icons, changing item names, placing items in groups that you find meaningful, etc, etc. Just watch what folder you're in when you do that... it's easy to get a bit confused as to what's backed up to where...

For lake depths...
Garmin Upper Midwest Fishing Guide chip
or
Garmin Inland Lakes Boundary Waters
I have not had the time to compare how coverage on the two overlap, but I have the UMFG chip, which has 9,500 lakes mapped in 7 states and some of southern Ontario...

Good luck!

When you are sitting at home in the evening just play around with the unit. Took me about 2 weeks playing with it in the evenings to feel comfortable with it.
