Hi all! We are looking forward to a winter camping trip this winter (our 3rd), but are looking for some ideas on places to go. We've entered at Sawbill and last year we entered at Wood Lake and made it to Good Lake. We have all of our own gear (building our own tent) and don't mind a bit of a challenge as we did 8 miles in last year. Any ideas for trip routes would be much appreciated!!! Thanks!

Here's where we've gone the past couple winters.

Thanks for the suggestions! We camped at -40 on Alton in the winter of 2011 and we went to Pine Lake in the spring of 2011. We'll have to look at our options and let you all know where we end up going this year. Happy Winter Camping!

The nice thing about the winter is you do not have to go in very far to be truly alone.
One thing I would mention: Be very careful with how far you go in and the upcoming weather. Ice conditions can change very quickly.
That means you might be able to easily travel 8 miles on your first day (with great ice conditions..I call it the ice highway) only to have a warm spell with some rain before you have to come out.
This has happened to me. It can literally take less time and energy to travel 8 miles, fully loaded, on good ice compared to traveling 1 mile on slush (or half a mile for that matter). It is not fun when your sled comes to a complete halt in a puddle of water.
The picture below shows our campsite on sawbill lake. We were in the middle of the lake when we started breaking through. Next thing we knew, we were standing in 6 inches of ice water. We had to pick all our gear off the sleds and walk to the nearest shore. Needless to say, our route changed significantly that year:(

Have you decided yet? :)"
Well, we've resigned ourselves to staying closer to home this year (lack of vacation days due to so many canoe trips last season-oops!). We are planning to head to Maplewood State Park in MN next weekend. We were just sitting down to plan our menu....pasta in a penne vodka sauce or some sort of meat option. How about you....been on any winter trips yet? We are trying to live through other people! :)

That sounds awesome!!! Have a great time and make sure you write your trip report...we need some winter reports!
