In the BWCA, I have not seen the plant that is commonly called Ramps or Wild Leek (Allium tricoccum). I checked the Superior National Forest inventory published in 1953 (Lakela, Olga. 1953. A Check-list of Ferns and Flowering Plants of the Quetico-Superior Wilderness Research Center. American Midland Naturalist 50: 488-500), and the species is not listed as present. Additionally, the species is absent from the checklist of plants in the book by Shan Walsh (Plants of Quetico and the Ontario Shield, 1980). The collection records of the University of Minnesota Bell Museum shows the nearest occurrences of that species just south of the BWCA and along the north shore:

From this, I would conclude that it is unlikely you will find Ramps in the BWCA. However, there is 1 species of wild onion that does appear on Lakela's checklist: the Prairie Onion (Allium stellatum).

I know they are big down in the Great Smokey Mtns area as my sister in law gets them a lot. They are very popular down there.

Well, now I am certainly interested, it seems as if there is hope. I will be up there this weekend and post back if I find some.

I have seen some. Went great with the night's tacos.

I haven't noticed them. I am the type of person that would notice.

I think that I found some on Seagull once. They smelled like onions/garlic.

Has anybody ever found ramps in the BWCA? I have only found them in Hardwoods, and much of the BW where I have been is coniferous. Just wondering if anybody has had any luck on fresh wild onions with their meals up there?
