I did the portage this summer. There are 2 major beaver dams. On the Trant side it's a good trail that opens up into a marshy area, but you can walk down the creek until it's deep enough to paddle to the first Beaver Dam. Than it's a paddle through that area until the second beaver dam (it's tricky due to all the submerged trees). After the second beaver dam it's pretty standard Quet portage. Not bad at all.

Fishing holes in western Brent: Find campsite DW in western Brent. #1--From there, fish the "narrows" from the main lake body back towards the portage to Cone for perhaps 1/4 mile or so. We caught several 2-3 pound SMB and lost a monster there. #2--A short paddle east from site DW there is a "boot-shaped" bay to the southeast. My son-in-law caught a 27" walleye not far in the narrows leading back into the bay. --Goose

Would anyone be willing to email me fishing info for Sarah, McIntyre, Brent, Conmee, Suazanette, and Burt. I know this is closely guarded information, and I would not make it public. I'm not looking for specifics, just general areas of each lake to focus on since we will have little time to fish. I really want to make sure my father-in-law gets some quality time fishing. We mostly fish for smallies, but I would like to finally find some walleye. Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I think we will try going through Trant and paddling down Agnes.

I also vote for the McNiece portage as one of the most beautiful in the park. Does have some tricky bits though.

If you go through Trant the paddle down Agnes is beautiful- I'd opt for it over the S-chain for aesthetics alone. You can opt for north bay by going through East and Jeff.

Yes - we went down the S-Chain to North and Burke. I think if we were ahead of schedule we would have taken in Agnes and Louisa but didn't.

Kahs to Side is a much discussed route here. On my 5 pt scale - maybe 3 - and I've done North to Kahs or revers probably more than any other route past Burke. My favorite part of the park is the stream out of Isabella paddling through marsh and over beaver dams - so I thin it's great - as well as that wonderful if not overused site on Isabella. I'd probably choose Trant or McNiece or Yum Yum but that is because I've only done them once - but if taking someone new, I would do Side to North if I was entering at PP.

It's all good.

I did it fall of 12. The Kahs end is messed up some. We paddled and pulled over dams and finally found what we thought was portage and other the 20 or 30 feet of if but not marshy trail, we found it and it was not a hard portage. If McNiece was a 4 on a 5 pt scale, this was a 2. Could be worse now of course - ask ranger when entering the park.

And I think McNiece is correct on Chrismar - again - ask rangers when entering - they do know latest conditions."

Ok, thanks for the information. If you went out through Trant would you just go down the S Chain back to North Bay? What about the portages from Kahs to Side going through the entry point?

Excerpt from 2011 trip report, "Kash" portage to McNiece: "We found it a little more tucked away than we would have thought from the map. (We knew it was well south of where McKenzie maps show it.) I wish we’d had a camera out as we eased the Le Tigre up against the sloping rock “shore” that is over about 8 feet of water. And I wish you could have seen the broad slick of algae-rich water running out of a little pool down this rock slope.

Anyway, we figured out that if I could hold the canoe jammed against the rock and Joe could get out without either falling in or upsetting the canoe, we’d be all right. He did and we were. Then he held the canoe while I got out, almost losing my footing and sliding in, and we were okay. I’m not going to dwell on the actual 1100-meter portage, because others have described it well. Suffice it to say, this was the most interesting portage of the trip and maybe of all trips. It had everything. It was challenging. We were in awe of the way the trail went up and down and hugged the edge of a marsh and the foot of a cliff. I can think of several portages that I have done that about did me in, but this is not one of them. I felt good afterwards and was glad we had decided to come this way." Do it! --Goose

I agree the portage from Kahshahpiwi to Mc Niece is tough. Also, the portage is not where it is shown on the maps. You can find the accurate location of the portage at quetico.info/ Click the link for the map of the portage tracks.

The portage from McNiece to Kahs is one of the tougher ones I've done in the Q. I'd say it was harder than Yum Yum, but that could be that I did McNiece late in the day and Yum Yum very early. I think McNiece may need some time to appreciate. I had looked forward to it based on reviews and was a little disappointed, but just passed through late in the day. Personally, I'd be more inclined to head out through Trant but either are great places to be!

We are going on a 10 day trip into the Q through Sarah and looping up to Burt and over Kahshahpiwi. We have never been to this area and would like to know the best place to spend a day or two to fish. Also I would like to know if it is worth going out of Kahshahpiwi through McNiece? I inserted a picture of our route.

Also are there any lakes north of the loop like Brent or Suzanette that are must visits? We fish for smallies and walleye mostly. Any comments on portages or campsites would be greatly appreciated.
