Quote from the article:
"The December solstice marks the beginning of astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere. During the solstice, the noon sun appears directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, a line of latitude 23.5 degrees south of Earth’s equator. It’s the southernmost point at which the sun can be seen straight overhead (90 degrees above the horizon)."

An interesting note is that the evenings have already gotten 2 minutes of daylight longer starting around December 15th in Duluth, even though the mornings continue to get shorter until the 21st.

Yeah, I was amazed how it jumped an hour back in November… haha!
Even down in Arizona… that sun doesn’t get all that high. Pretty tough to get good solar without tilting panels…

Your sun is around 34 degrees now with 10 hours of sunlight at solar noon. It is 20 degrees in Duluth.

The date when the sunset starts getting later was always noted by a friend of ours in school. As he pointed out, sunrise was something he never saw. So he cared about the change in daylight at the end of the day more than when the days themselves got longer.

I still celebrate the winter solstice whether the days are starting sooner or later. The next 6 months are still the best with increasing daylight length each day. I am up and about almost every evening at sunset so keep more interest in that than sunup. I often miss that event.

I’m almost opposite Dan… I’ve got my “bedroom “ doors facing east to catch the morning sunrise. My problem is I have to go back to bed to enjoy it!
