09/21/2020 09:32PM Just curious as to what is holding back the water this year, is it lack of rain or beaver dams? I know August 2019 we went through there and on the way out we had to get out several time due to low water. Then for whatever reason (I assumed a beaver dam had let loose) on the way back in a week later the water was deep and ripping. We actually paddled past the portage to the EP because the water was so high and we didn't notice it. |

I'm not shy about getting my feet wet and have been through this entry dozens of times, but there was no water to speak of which is why myself and many others portaged 3/4 of the way to Mudro Lake. There was nothing to float your canoe on until that point, and even then, had to get out several times because the creek was dried up. Hopefully these posts will give people a decent heads up as to what to expect when traveling this route.... |

Looking at some maps is everyone saying the creek is dry so we need to portage from the parking lot to Mudro lake, as to say the creek is dry and not able to paddle. Its sounds like everyone has trampled down a portage to the lake, is this a swampy area that could be tough to get in and out of. " Absolutely not, read my post above. |

09/15/2020 06:39PM It's been awhile since I trotted down that embankment along Picket creek, but you should be able to get a couple hundred yards down the stream before it gets too mushy. It will depend on the amount of recent rains in the area. There is an "S" section or two to the creek where you will want to get your boat in and paddle. You won't want to trust the muck of the creek bed at that point. As someone posted above, you might be better just getting your feet wet and towing your canoe and gear behind you until the creek bed becomes squishy and then hop in. You'll know when you go. |

09/15/2020 09:26AM I'll just add my two cents that the creek was really low in mid-July when I was their with my daughter. Having experienced that creek in low water and with that large beaver dam (a couple of years ago) which blew out one spring, we opted to go east on Picket Lake. It's doable in low-water, we just didn't feel like the adventure at the time. |

09/15/2020 08:17AM My very first BW trip in 85 was to Mudro. I recall having to portage most of the way to the lake. 2 years ago in October I paddled all the way from the EP to the lake. |

A portage has been created that skirts the river at least 3/4 of the way into Mudro Lake, making getting in and out of this entry rather difficult and time consuming. The last 1/4 into Mudro still involves loading and unloading the canoe and skooting your way through the muck bottom. How deep was the muck? |

09/14/2020 11:30AMMikeinMpls: "When I was there in later July, the creek was passable going in. I had no problems. Coming out, and even after some rain, the creek was noticeably lower. I found that odd. Things get tight around the fallen tree over the creek, even in higher water. When we were there end of July we had to duck under that tree on the way in. On the way out we cleared it no problem. |

09/14/2020 06:50AM It was like that in August as well. Never seen Picket Creek that low before. |

09/13/2020 06:58PM Wow, that's crazy. We went in July and it was the lowest I can remember then. We had to portage a ways down the weeds past the usual landing but not too bad. Also had to pull over some rocks toward the entrance to Mudro. |

This may be old info to some but wanted to give those still planning a trip this way with somewhat of a notice. Safe travels!! |
