I have base camped multiple times on both Boot and Horse with the focus on fishing. Horse is better IMO, with more fish. Big fish in Boot.

Boot lake.

Horse lake.

Boot was 2010, Horse was 2012.

Great pics, seems easier than the 3 to Fourtown. We love Boot lake but are going to give Horse a try this year. I hope the fishing is as good as we have on Boot.

I prefer the portages to Horse. The portage to Sand Pit is a bit hilly. watch your step on the rocks if it's wet. The first picture is from that portage in October. From Sandpit to Tin Can Lake is flat as can be and easy despite the length. I think the planking is on that one, but it may be on the portage into Horse. Can't remember.

If you choose to go up past Boot, traffic really thins out past Gun. Although, Gun has one or two nice sites on it, Thunder is mostly deserted. If you're lucky, you could secure the solo campsite on Beartrap.

This was at the site just north of the site by the river mouth

Mirth,

I agree. Good site. Nice and elevated. Did you happen to see the old logging relic at the bottom of the rock slope that leads to the narrows? It was an iron ring staked into the rock that must have been used for some kind of logging. It was hard to miss, massive.

We had very nice fishing in the cove with the portage that leads to Fourtown.

The site at the mouth of the Horse river is nicer. The first place I ever camped in the BW. The other site has a bit of a challenging canoe landing, but still a nice site.

Yes, 1st site N of Horse river is fantastic. IMO, if there is an open campsite on Horse take it. Great fishing! Day trip up the river or over to Fourtown. Email me if you want details.

The north island campsite is very nice. Jig the points with some leeches on the west side of the lake if you want to catch some walleyes.

Horse tends to fill up in June. Best to take whatever is open.

Hi, we got our permit for Horse Lake...we've always gone past boot. Any advice on campsites or fishing? I'm not expecting secrets but help is appreciated, it's just a couple and their dog...next year our son will join, I'm looking forward to that. Our trip is in June.
