Brule's great; I have covered the entire length into the wind though, and at least we really felt like we'd accomplished something at the end of the day...but it was a hard day. Campsites in the far eastern bay are not so hot, IMO. But Vernon's cool, and there are some hidden falls north of the portage into Vernon from Brule.

My advice is to get across Brule as soon as possible. Wind and waves get challenging later in the day. If you start early in the morning before the wind starts up, you should be ok.

I like the Cone chain. Winchell is my favorite lake in the BWCA. Good campsites there.

Brule has so much to offer. Some major day trips can be had without leaving the lake. Trips portaging off the lake on all the cardinal compass points. South Temperance is an easy portage and on to North Temperance is easy, too. The Cones are easy, too. In June and after all the snow this last winter you will likely be able to wade up the first and last and actually paddle the middle one. I watch some folks pulling nice walleye out of North Cone while waiting for a slow moving group to clear the portage to Cliff. Echo is a beautiful lake to spend a day on. Likely to have it all to yourself.

There are a couple of real nice campsites on Brule and everyone heads to those first. They are often used for base camps, so don't count on them. There are lots of other fine sites to chose from.

The lake can get rough with the big open reaches. Carry food for the day in case you have to wait until winds die down in the evening to get back to your camp. I carry a hammock and book as well and will pull out anywhere there are two convenient trees and wait out the winds. June is a time when there are fairly regular blows from the east off Superior. Those sometimes last for days bringing temps in the low 40s and blowing mizzlin' rain. Seems every June trip I have taken has had 2 1/2 or 3 days of that weather. I just come prepared.

If you are willing to go as far as Gaskin, you should head west to South Temperance and then south into Weird and/or Jack Lakes. Or north out of South Temperance to North Temperance and then west to Cherokee (The second week of June should have the lake trout not too deep.). Or make the entire loop to Cherokee and then head back through Town, Vesper, and Cam Lakes back into Brule.

Ruan Island, the one south of Cone Bay used to be an excellent campsite. It is out in the main body of the Lake, so catches a lot of wind. There was a fishing camp on that island, back in the old days, when my dad and I first began going to Brule, in 1957. Cone Bay can be excellent walleye fishing around that time of year, as is North Bay on the map, or we used to call it Echo Bay. Brule Island is a large camping area, to access the east end. I would give Echo Lake a shot. At various times over the years the pike and bass fishing were excellent in that Lake. It is a short portage and the DNR site showed a big sampling of walleye there, a number of years ago. Fish around the islands near the landing and back into the bay where the Sky Blue Water Lodge used to be. South Cone can be good walleye fishing in June. Vernon Lake is a very interesting short but hilly portage. There used to be big Northern in that Lake, I will post a picture of one that my dad and caught. There are a lot of message board postings on fishing Brule, so would recommend searching the site. Fish the mouths of the two feeder streams in Echo Bay. The night bite used to be the best on Brule for walleye. Recommend that you take some night crawlers. They are easy to keep and work on both bass and walleye. Slow troll using spinners, slip sinker and a very small hook, commensurate to the size of your bait. I have always been amazed at the small size hooks that the Gunflint guides use.

The island campsite on South Cone is pretty cool. We caught a bunch of smallies around there as well. We explored North cone a little, not enough to really give it a recommendation.

Spend a day in caribou and little caribou. Both lakes are wonderful and decent fishing.

Have a great trip!

Going into Brule the 2nd week of June for a week. There will be only two of us. The plan is simple. Attempt to find nice campsite north of the entry point or to the east. There are also some sites to the northwest towards South Cone Lake that look good. Set up base camp and then take day trips out fishing and exploring the rest of the week. Probably fish on Brule the 1st day.

In the past, we have base camped on lakes that have taken quite a bit of work and portages to get to. Often, between setting up and leaving, two days are pretty much gone, not to mention the hard work as we pack in quite heavy.

So this year, if all goes well, we will simply find a base camp on Brule, then explore nearby lakes for day trips.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Gaskin, Caribou, and Horseshoe look like they would be good for fishing.
