You probably don't want to hear this yet, but in my experience the more miserable a situation is, the better the story/memory is. When my buddies/family sit by a fire and talk about BWCA or other outdoor adventures, I don't think we have ever discussed a beautiful sunny afternoon or a nice calm sunset, we always talk about getting lost at night while still trying to find a site, having our tent ripped out of the ground and destroyed or having to discard most of our food due to squirrels. Misery makes for stronger memories, in my experience. One day you will [hopefully] laugh about this together.

I posted a Bog trip report last July. Looks like we had many of the same experiences. Were there still 9 trees down over portage? Drive over any on way to lot?

LindenTree: "Bog Lake was in my division during the Pagami Fire, that place got hit hard by fire.
I walked into it before the fire and was not that impressed, but heard that it has good walleyes.
It seems like I heard about the site on the SW side, but not sure. I'm suprised the outfitter told you all three sites were open. Its been pretty common knowlege that they are closed. This is why the permits went down to two a week."
To clarify, there are two sites currently open on Bog Lake. One site was rehabbed and the other was unaffected by the fire.

1. McKenzie maps don't ask the FS to update maps. Fisher does. Use Fisher maps.

2. Don't be too much of a Debbie Downer, you wanted to see something new, and you did. Fire is wilderness, too.

ELKO you don't by chance have some photos of the whole lake looking at burned area and one looking at the green area?

I'm not sure why, but on some maps the se campsite is not shown on some maps, but the site has been open and used long before the Pagami Fire. I'm not sure why it's not shown. I've always thought that portage was longer that it said on the map! Bog is a great little walleye and sometimes large northern lake. I've done many days trips to it. The bugs, no matter what time of the year, can be horrendous.

I would definitely say that that Southwestern site is 100% open. It had plenty of room and was grassy but also tucked into the woods. The site would do a nice job of keeping the rain and wind off you but might make it bad for bugs.

Thanks for sharing and giving more insight to the current situation on Bog. The maps on this site show that campsite as a place of interest where the last report from 2009 shows it as a closed campsite. You were right it has been there for a while, wonder if they reopened it after the fire.

Anytime in the woods is good..... sorry it went bad. The maps section on this site has comments on the top 3 sites as being closed by the FS after the Pagami fire. The SW site use to be marked as closed but comments say that it looks open and fully functional now.

I’m sorry to hear that things were miserable. Thanks for sharing. It sounds like your kids were troopers about the whole thing though. I just took a peak at my maps, Voyageur shows it, but I don’t have a Fisher map of the area. I noticed my map also lists the portage as “247 to 320”. So you were right, it was longer.

Ah I am sorry to hear all that. That fire ruined sooo much. Bog Lake and Isabella Lake were on my to do list but I never made it before the fire. Now I have to wait like 25 years before it even gets somewhat to what it was. Always check the maps on here as well. Was this the campsite LINK

Too bad the first night killed the mood. I am sure had you found that site earlier it would have been more enjoyable.
