There are three campsites on Nels. I believe the one on the east side of the lake is the best. The Walleyes as well as the northerns tend to be on the small side, but there are some decent small and large mouth Bass. There is no portage to the lake. A road off the Echo Trail takes you directly to the lake. There is supposed to be a portage to Pickett Lake but I’ve never been able to find it. I’ve tried looking for it from the Pickett side but what portage is there ends at an old beaver pond. There is no portage to Hegman. Nels doesn’t get a lot of traffic so it’s a nice lake to spend a few days.

Did you see the page MNDNR has on Nels?
Additional info such as Fish Survey, water quality, and maps are on the left side of the page.

Hi folks,

Trying to find some info on Nels Lake. Right outside the BW by 22/23. Does anyone have any info they could share? There doesn't seem to be much info online.

Campsite info, fishing, how are the portages, etc.
