05/16/2020 10:05AM Yes it appears the deal hasn't been reached but I would be helluva surprised if it opens before June 21. It sure seems like the Canadians are more concerned about CoVid-19 than the US is, you can see that in the way Trudeau talks about it vs. Trump. And pick up on it by the comments made by Canadians in Facebook and message boards. They don't want us there. I cancelled my reservation in Quetico for a full refund. The only money "lost" in my whole trip planning was an Ontario fishing license I bought for my daughter. I hope that I'll need mine for a fall trip to Quetico. As of yesterday the Minnesota stay at home order and the USFS both allow overnight BWCA trips and the fire ban has been lifted. I have a hotel booked in Ely for before and after. I know the MN still doesn't want us to travel long distances for outdoor recreation, but we are still going. I live in an area with few cases and only 1 in the last 10 days or so, and I tested negative this week so I won't have any guilt. |

05/15/2020 09:38PM Well, it's final. I cancelled my Spring 2020 Quetico reservation. The border is closed. Back to the BWCA and we will enjoy the trip for sure! We will bring antiseptic wipes for the thunderboxes! Joe |

05/06/2020 07:32PM I applied for my daughter's RABC permit in February and they charged my credit card but she doesn't think she ever got it. I already rescheduled our trip to the June 1 opener, so I called and they said it was mailed and evidently lost...they will print another copy and mail it if and when they announce a border opening. I asked the guy his OPINION of the border opening...the closure now goes to May 23 or so. He said he thinks the closure will be extended until July or even August, because of the bad situation in the USA. We will hear something in the next week or two about the border closure. He said if we can't use the RABC for our trip, to call and they will extend it a full year. That is cool. My RABC is good to August so I'm okay for the time being if the border opens... but I have a September trip scheduled too. I already have a BWCA permit for late May as a backup. MN doesn't want us there...but if they will sell me a fishing license and the USFS keeps BWCA open, we will keep to ourselves and self-quarantine for 14 days, I promise. Joe |
