Hello ethan613
I have done this route many a time. If you park at trails end there is a small, kind of hidden boat launch, on the south side of the trails end campground that you can leave from; about a 2-minute walk from the main parking lot at Trails End near site 33. When you come out you just make sure to take the spur to Gull Lake and and your car will be right there at the launch.

This is a great option. Think I'll go with this. Get to see more area and avoid all of the issues on Sag. Thanks everyone for the input!

If you don't want to take the Seagull River. Put in on Seagull and take out on Sag or vice versa. It's a just short run from one in put to the other or if you have vehicles you park one in each parking lot.
Last year we took a tow to the end of 3 mile island on Seagull and got picked up at 3 American Point on Sag.
To reiterate the others, the wind on either can be a challenge so get an early start. My only dump in the bdub was on a windy day on Seagull. My most exciting paddle was on a windy day on Sag. at American Point on the same trip! It,s not the kind of excitement was looking for!

Try to get on to any real big water early in the morning. It is almost always calm. Note almost. I have had a blow come up at 5:30 in the morning and chase me off Saganaga, but most early mornings have been mirror calm.

I usually have a quick, no cooking breakfast for those days facilitating an early start. "

THIS!!!!

I've crossed Sag at least 48 times. 3 times it was too windy to cross, and at least 3 other times, I shouldn't have made the crossing. If there is anything I have learned over the years, it's cross early in the morning. EARLY!! Not 11 am. 5,6,7,8 yes. Don't be stupid. If she's blowing, pull over and take a nap. Cross after 7 pm. Any westerly component gets funneled out of cache bay and blows hard towards American point. In calm seas, American point to 1st bay takes about 45 minutes. I've had it take 4 hours in heavy wind. It was NOT fun. If you're doing your loop clockwise, the wind should be at your back on Sag when you cross. I would still do it early. And Treat Seagul the same way. She can blow really hard. The water on Ester is beautiful. Do not try to portage through Ashdick. The portage from AshDick to Swamp is awful. On really windy days, all the campsites on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd bay will backfill quickly. NO one wants to cross sag in heavy wind. Just another reason to go through there early in the day. Many years we have paddled out half a day early, just to take advantage of light winds, and a smooth sag crossing. I think the worst stretch is between Honeymoon Island and Munkers narrows (between munker island and long island). With a NW wind, the waves get really big at the northern mouth of Munkers narrows. I don't really want to scare you, I just want you to be safe and stress to follow Sedges advice.

If you don't want to deal with paddling back through the seagul river at the end of your route, I'm sure you could arrange for someone from Seagul outfitters to come pick you up at the public landing in the Sag Narrows. Or at the beginning of your trip, just drop your stuff at Seagul outfitters, and see if someone will help you drop your vehicle at the end of the trail on sag narrows. I think the one sag landing costs about $20 per week to park though.

Definitely start and end at the Trails end parking lot. Starting on Seagull there means getting through a shallow, narrow spot to get to the main lake. If the lake is low it may mean walking your canoes through, but it is easy. It certainly makes the end of the trip easier compared to Wables adventure with the portages through the campground on the Seagull River.

Sounds like a great plan. Yes you can access both lakes from the Trails End Campground parking lot. The Sea Gull launch is about an 1/8 of a mile from the lot.

Sweet route, you're right about big water but you've got time it sounds. Good fishing, good areas in general.

Probably. I did a similar trip last year in July from Saturday to the following Sunday. Here are some general notes:

Got to the Seagull landing at 2:30 am, took a nap and on the water at 5:30. 2/3 of the way down Ogish at noon, hit Knife at 2:00. Great traveling weather.

Left knife for Sag on Friday and staged SE of American Point.

Left our Gold Island camp at 9 on Sunday, battled wind on Sag. Got into the river and tried unsuccessfully to portage around the first rapids. Long story. Portage ended in a camp site. Had to pull the canoe up the rapids. Took the actual portage that again went through the camp ground, and paddled back to the Seagull landing. I didn’t like the River at all. Boats, cabins, people...Got to the landing at 1:30.

Hi all, I'm looking at doing a loop from Seagull to Ogish up to Ester and back to Sag. If I park at Trails End I should be able to get back to my car pretty easily, right? Just wondering if there's anything I should know about that I'm not seeing. I'll definitely only paddle the big water with calm winds but any other suggestions for this loop?
Thanks,
Ethan
