The water is very shallow approaching the landing. Splash to Ensign is only about 30 ft and again pretty flat and dry,I didn’t even attach my yoke to my solo for this one." Just manhandled my solo canoe from Ensign to Splash without the yoke as well last May. Would have taken longer to attach/detach it. Very short, easy portage. The Splash end was a little muddy but not deep, suck your boots off mud...just muddy puddles. If the water is high and in an aluminum canoe I might try running it. Too rocky for kevlar canoe imho. The Splash end of the Splash-Newfound portage is super easy. Packed sand/ fine gravel and very gentle gradient. The landing on the Newfound side is very rocky. I caught a tow boat there and the operator stopped about 10-20 feet out and walked the tow boat to the landing to avoid dinging the outboard’s prop and navigate through the submerged rocks. Its a little tricky footing due to the rocks. The rocky zone is about 10 feet wide. The rest of the portage is like a park trail. While I was waiting for the towboat I watched two large guys in a very loaded canoe run the rapids. They made it but they also took some water over the gunwales. They did a little bailing and just kept on paddling. The down side of these relatively easy portages is Ensign is a popular lake with competition for the campsites but there are a lot of campsites. |
