Wind on Jackfish Bay?

I don’t mess with Basswood.  I came in with a buddy off of Pipestone and Basswood was rolling and breaking.  We planned on sticking to the leeward side (west) going north and then make a turn and head downwind.  We got sucked out into the middle heading into the wind and by this time any turn was going to swamp us.  On top of all this my neophyte paddling partner is a weak paddler and half way across decides he’s just going to stop and take a break.  Wth?  We did make it to a tiny island and sat out the wind but to this day I have a fear of big water.  "</quote>

cyclones30	07/24/2020 10:38PM You should be fine unless it's NE wind. If it's NW that's perfect for your route, hug the west shore and you're good. We did it into a 10mph NE wind our last time that way. Took some more effort paddling but no big deal. We were still at camp where you're hoping shortly after lunch.
Aldy1	07/24/2020 10:18PM You will be paddling directly into the wind, but I think that's better than a strong side wind. Progress may seem slow but you'll get there. I've paddled Jackfish on some pretty rough waters and my advice is hang close to the shore and have a game plan for if you swamp the canoe. Always better to be prepared. You'll be just fine assuming there's no crazy high gusts.
