I was referring to Shagawa Lake. Sorry about that. I got misconfused. By saying Shagawa is a hidden gem, it’s hidden in plain sight, 2 blocks from town. But you meant Burntside, so I’m no help there. Hope you have a fun trip.

Maybe you are referring to Shagawa Lake, not Burnside... Shagawa is very close to town. You should study the map & see which boat landing on Burntside will get you closest to these Superior Nat'l. Forest Backcountry sites. Watch the wind as this lake can get very rough, trust me, I have firsthand experience. The sites are beautiful! Enjoy!

Ok, I'm getting excited about this lake now.... The question is - will I be able to navigate those islands? Just half kidding. Thanks for the tips Jillpine. I plan to be there on a Saturday morning so I'll have to get lucky to find a site.

I fished that lake a couple times with a friend who is a local guide. 2 blocks from town and the fishing is good. Easy access. I have thought it is a hidden gem, so to speak. Not for the locals. Can’t comment on the campsites tho.

No permit needed. First come, first serve.

I have camped on Burntside. I believe there are six sites no permit or reservation needed. Set up same as Boundary Waters campsites with fire pit, latrine, and tent pads. Entry lake with motors allowed so campsites fill up quickly especially on weekends.

I see this lake is just outside the BW but there are marked campsites on the Voyageur map. What is the policy for camping on these sites? I was thinking of spending my last night of the trip here. Has anyone camped on Burntside? Thanks.
