02/05/2021 03:05PM Thanks for another new old trip. I really love the photos. My dad photographed our first three trips back in the sixties but they were all lost in a house fire and your pictures remind me of ours from those trips. I still have the Fisher Canoe Maps we used ,brittle and smoke stained they hang on the wall of my office. Keep 'em coming! |

02/04/2021 08:32AM I have been having trouble deciding on a trip plan for this year. This seems to hit most of my priorities. Although I have been to a large part of it several times there is a lot that would be new to me. Thank you for the timely (at least for me) report. |

02/04/2021 03:03AM Lynda, thanks for your recent reports. I do too much trip planning - so many places I want to go (an now I can almost visualize the route as you describe where you went each day w/o looking at my maps), but when I read about some of the portages you did, I wonder why. Personally, I enjoy going back and reading my reports, and I try to get them posted a little closer to the trip date, but with the facebook option of just throwing up a few pictures and saying how wonderful it was, I am going to try to get more reports posted on this site. There are so many wonderful trip reports on this site, and I really enjoy reading your past experiences, and everyone else's, as I can learn so much, and as has been mentioned many times, it is nice to imagine/relive a trip as it is being read during these cold months. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and wisdom. Additionally, I have been to Adams once, and I also enjoyed the portage from Beaver to Adams - and I enjoyed catching and releasing many large Smallies in Beaver - but the Walleyes all stayed hidden. But it is hard to pick one area over another, I would like to get back to Adams, and also get to Makwa, but the Stuart River seems to be calling, and Iron Lake sounds like lots of fun, if you can get a campsite. So please keep the reports coming! |

02/03/2021 11:45AM Great report and fun to see those old pictures. In there you reference the Camp Easton for Boys on Little Long Lake outside of Ely - interestingly enough, that same camp was my introduction to the area. For 5 or 6 years, beginning I believe in 2011, I took my church's confirmation class to that same camp for several days each summer. It's now called Rock Ridge. Loved it up there and since then one of the other trip chaperones and myself have taken a couple trips into the actual BWCA. Love every minute of it. |

02/03/2021 09:13AM What a wonderful report. I enjoy reading a good "throwback" trip report and living vicariously through it. One of the greatest additions to any trip report is when people share those special moments/experiences and how they felt at that moment during the trip; the "eerie" paddle through Insula on glass water for example, or the "relaxed and peaceful" feeling you have on the last day of a great trip. Or even the contentment found in watching bugs, or other small creatures, hard at work in a wilderness of such complexity. Some of these feelings/experiences come on immediately, others are the culmination of days in canoe country, which is what keeps drawing us back year after year. Thanks for sharing, JW |

I can do fine with snakes and even spiders. . .but it turns my stomach to have a leech on me. And to see someone keeping one in place like that, it was pretty gross. Smokey was a guy who liked to play to his audience, and as soon as he knew it bothered us he kept it up. Still, there was a real comedic side to it, too. :-) |

02/02/2021 08:23PM If there were one place in the BWCA that I could return to again, it would probably be Boulder/Adams/Elbow(Beaver) and the Kawishiwi River. To me that was just a beautiful area. Of course Cherokee is my favorite lake, but I have been there three times. These lakes were just once, and it was a terrible disappointment that health issues (this time mine and not my husband's) kept us from getting back there in 2006. |

02/02/2021 07:40PM Thanks for the old map. I'm sure a number of folks have gone to a bunch of the lakes in that area, but to me, it's sort of a no-man's-land between the more popular routes. Nice. |

I wanted to scan a map for this trip like I did for the 1973 one, but I couldn't find a map that had the whole trip on it that would fit on my scanner. We went from Adams to Elbow and took the short portage to the Kawishiwi River. The big X is where we camped. Then we went southwest on the K River and if you look at the very lower left corner of this map segment you can see "pictographs" with a tiny arrow and a tiny X. If you are looking at a newer map, Elbow Lake is probably Beaver Lake. Here is the part of the map that covers SOME of this trip:

02/02/2021 03:59PM What a wonderful report, Lynda! We wouldn't trip now with some of the gear (cotton clothes, ponchos, etc) we used on our early trips, but it was what we had and it taught us lessons. Had to laugh out loud at Smokey's "pet leach" story. Did you ever make it back to Blueberry Hill on Kekekabic? Yes, digital photography has spoiled us--shoot dozens of photos without worrying about running out of film or paying for processing. And we've had the experience of finding a dehydrated food item that really tastes great and works with our meal planning style only to discover that we can't find it next time we're planning a trip. Thanks for sharing and taking us along. TZ |
