OldGuide2: "Emerald used to be great, even spectacular fishing. Caught a 7-pounder there. But the last time I was there, it had been fished pretty heavy. The lack of traffic during Covid may have changed that. There are two little islands near the end of the lake you can troll around. Also have caught lake trout in Emerald. Bernie Carlson, who used to run Quetico-Superior Outfitters on Moose put us on to it a long time ago, Said he spent his honeymoon there. Plough is also really good fishing, but if you go to Plough then it would be tough to do the Man chain unless you just do it as a day trip. There was a fire on Emerald many years ago that dramatically changed things, but it is still a really pretty lake. Not a fan of Carp. It can get pretty crowded. Remember trying to find a campsite there years ago and ran across a group with one of those huge wall tents like you have in a campground, lawn chairs, a cooler full of beer, a large Coleman stove, and the radio blaring away. We just went on in from there. Didn't want to be anywhere near those people.

I appreciate the advice Oldguide2! Thankfully never ran across any campers like that in the BWCA, not what most are looking for in a wilderness canoe trip.

bhouse46: "The Man chain is a scenic route with lots to offer indeed. I have used it as part of a loop through Kawnippi and an in and out to Kawnippi, all easy in 7-8 days. If water levels are not too excessive a trip through the Falls chain would be worth the time and effort."

Thanks bhouse46, we have been considering the man chain of lakes. Sounds very scenic and the fishing from what I have read is pretty good too.

Banksiana: "I've had ridiculously good smallmouth fishing on Plough. Also great luck on the chain of little lakes (Beaver, Mink, Fisher Marten) between Carp and Knife- caught smallies and some grossly oversized walleye on those lightly traveled lakes."

Thanks Banksiana, we will give those a try!

Ausable: "I've been through the Carp entry point to travel to the end of the Man Chain and back (i.e. an out-and-back rather than a loop trip). There is good fishing in all of those lakes. Carp and Sheridan also offer good fishing, I've even taken a side route through Emerald and stayed there one night before portaging through High Man to get to the rest of the Man lakes."

Thanks so much Ausable!

Hello, my son and I are planning a trip into Quetico beginning June 6th for 7-8 days. Our entry point is Carp lake, we are thinking 3 different camp sites and mainly want to catch smallies, pike, and walleye. What are some lakes or routes that you recommend for us. Any advice is also appreciated, this is our first trip to Quetico. Thanks in advance!
