Paddled around the engine in fall of 22. I'm always amazed at how intact it is.
Not sure of the time it takes from fall as we entered at wood and exited at fall, camped and fished along the way, though the 5 seems right if the wind is favorable.
Its my understanding that the 4 mile is a winter portage at this time as the beaver ponds are taking over the low sections, but I'd suggest to verify that with an outfitter.

I agree about 4 hours of paddling plus one hour of portaging. All three portages are wheeled portages and easy as a paddler. Four mile portage is not an option.

I've only ever been there via Wood Lake and unfortunately didn't realize there was old logging equipment there until a year or two after we tripped. Hopefully I will get back there again some day to see it.

I have not paddled that exact route but have been in those areas. I would estimate for average conditions it would take 4 hours of paddling and 1 hour of portaging. That entire route allows motor boats and those 3 portages (Fall to Newton, Newton to Pipestone Bay, Pipestone Bay to Back Bay) are motor boat friendly.

Last year I tried to find the locomotive but did not see it. The water was high, though, and not sure we were looking in exactly the right spot.

I need some insight. How long does it take to paddle from Fall Lake put-in to Hoist Bay in Basswood? Is any portion of it motorized? Is the four mile portage still an option? Is the steam donkey still there in the bay? Thanks.
