04/05/2009 09:37PM This year my little girl turns 38. She has a career and family of her own and is terribly busy. I've been very fortunate to accompany my son on a couple of BWCA trips but never my daughter. Carolyn and I have canoed on the Wisconsin River and taken some motorcycle rides together but after reading your reflections I can only wonder what I've missed with a wilderness camping experience. Thanks for sharing your trip story! Best wishes on your battle with prostate cancer. |

04/02/2009 09:11PM I enjoyed the report very much. A little brief but oh well. I can relate to taking the kid. I took my son last year for his first time when he was 16. I knew we had a good time but there were days when the bugs really got to him and the portaging took its toll. He liked the idea of leaving a day early so I kinda thought it would be his last time. Then about a month after we got home he comes up to me and says he wants to go again this year. He vows to be in better shape and is working out daily to prove it. Good luck with your physical stuff and hope you and your family have many more trips together. |

04/02/2009 06:43PM DL, I too have prostate cancer, discovered last June. It was in Stage One, with a Gleason of six and only found in one of twelve biopsies. I chose Brachytherapy as my form of treatment, and had the procedure done on July 1st of last year. I have one month of radiation left in my 160 implanted seeds, and at my last check up my PSA had dropped from 2.8 to .85. I go to the doctor again the 14th of this month and I am hoping for a PSA of 0.00. I was 51 at the time it was discovered! So I am with you against the hidden enemy! I did my trip last summer the week before my procedure and it was needed! Great Report! I know that something like this makes you really look at life and appreciate it! 04/01/2009 12:29PM I liked your story that was "short on details and more about reflections about life, relationships and priorities". Thank you for sharing your reflections on life. Life is short. Windows of opportunity are there for just a fleeting moment. You must act, or the opportunity is forever lost. I had a similar experience with my daughter in 2000. We fondly call the experience the "Ill-fated Churchill River Canoe Trip". The river trip failed to happen (too much detail to explain the failed dynamics with the second party). However, the trip brought me closer to Jessica (and her to me). We ended up (after ditching the odd couple) having a good time and we saw and did things together that were not on the "to-do-list". A good memory. |
