SC. This fishing up there is phenomenal. I've been to Kawnipi twice now and had similar experiences both times. Big pike, big bass and tons of walleyes.

Thanks for posting the report. Kawnipi is on our radar for 2011. The fishing sounds phenomenal. It's seems obvious from the one photo that the pike was a goner. It sucks but it happens. You did the right thing inviting it to lunch. I'd have done the same.

Thanks for sharing. My next trip to Kawnipi will be your route rather than via the Wawiag River!

Great report..... I hope to do Kawnippi next summer.

Thanks Tom!

We were also disappointed about the outcome with the trophy pike. We were casting into a weedy section w/ small cranks and the fish devoured my brother's wiggle wart in about 2 feet of water. Kinda a freak thing to catch a fish so large in that shallow of water.

When we had the fish next to the boat it became obvious that the lure was swallowed deeply, so we couldn't release it next to the canoe. The lure was back behind the gills. We had to land it on shore and by then the fish was bleeding badly and close to death. Rather than waste it we decided to keep it to eat.

Excellent report and pics. The eagle shot is fantastic. That campsite with the table was perfect for you guys.

I was on Kawnipi in 1992 with my younger brother and had great fishing too. Thanks for posting.

ps. disappointed you guys kept the trophy northern. :(

Nojobro, I'm the suspicious looking fellow on the far right.

Lovely! Sounds like a great trip; I'm very jealous of your wonderful weather. ;-) Which one are you in the picture of your group?

Haven't had time to read your report yet, but I'm LMAO about the wicked step-mother comment. Ha!
Kiporby 09/25/2009 08:19AM
Adopted father?! Haha. More like a wicked step-mother.

Yes, the Quetico is a very special place. Thanks for the comments guys.

Kawnipi has to be on everyone's "Must Do" list. It is just that damn good. Fishing, scenery and campsites! WOW!

Kip you are truly blessed to have so many opportunites to paddle with your brothers, daughter and adopted son (Kanoes) :-) And you are one guy who I know cherishes every moment and treats the wilderness with a deep respect. I wish there were more like you.
