Best campsite on the lake is the most southern one, closest to the portage to Winchell. Next best is the northern one at the end of the north-pointing bay. The site to the NW is very small, and the western one, on an island, was lacking any shade at all three years ago.

Had very little luck on fishing, but a great moose sighting.

I have been through there twice and stayed on the northern most campsite, back in one of the large fingers, i think the most east as well. Nice site, real high up, great canoe landing for 4, a little of a pain getting gear up to it but beautiful sunrise spot, great seats/ledge out in front, nice site worth the work.

As for the fishing, one of the trips the pike were VERY active and we caught many nice eater size, largest one around 27 i think. Not a ton, just a nice amount to keep us content.
The next time i went through, a little later in June, I couldnt even get a bit and that was frustrating. Not sure where they were, i worked the whole east end and got nowhere. Not sure what the difference was, i used the same lures and being the 2nd time through knowing more obvisously than trip 1, i expected to do real well...not even a bite was tough to swallow.

Beautiful lake, would go back in a heartbeat, there are just so many nice places and so little time with one trip a year...hoping to expand that to 2 in the next year or so when kids are a little bigger. :)

OGG you are welcome, It was a really fun day but we wish we would have been able to split it up into 2 days like originally planned. We saw a lot that day but we didn't get to "stop and smell the roses". We didn't get to climb to the top of the cliff on Winchell, find the waterfall near Winchell, or do as much fishing as we would have liked.

Ducks, Thanks for the details. Our group has talked about various day trips from Gaskin -- including this one -- which would be pretty ambitious. --Goose

Omega is our favorite Bdub lake so far. We like all the skinny fingers and the small intimate feel of it. From Henson back to Gaskin we only saw one other group and it was August."

Ducks: was that a pretty full day, or what? It looks to be about a 10-mile or so paddle, plus portages, no? Do you recall how long it took? Thanks. --OGG"

It took around 7-8 hours. We got going before 7am so we'd get across Winchell before it got windy and were back to camp before 3. We ate lunch at a campsite on Pillsbury and did some fishing along the way. We rushed it more than we would have liked. The day before we were wind bound so we combined our 2 planned (Winchell, Omega, Henson) and (Henson, Pillsbury, Allen, Jump) day trips into one.

Nice Lake. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It has everything I look for in a BWCA lake; rocks, water, trees. This was the southern most campsite on the peninsula.

western most campsite on Omega
just avoid this campsite

I am also interested in info on Omega . . . e.g., as for fishing, does it have more to recommend it than just "eater size Northern?"

We just passed through a few years ago. But, I concur with RoundRiver. It's a very beautiful lake. Wish we would've taken the time to explore & linger there a bit longer. Alas, we had Davis lake (very beautiful as well) on our minds....

The Omega ~ Kiskadinna portage. This is actually the Kiskadinna end. If you decide to head this way don't let this short portage fool you. It is quite tough for it's short length.

The Omega end of same portage.

There is a very nice campsite near this portage on Omega. Good place for lunch (if available) on your day trip.

Yes. It is beautiful, and interesting with many bays/arms. Some eater size northerns. We heard and saw moose, beaver, and a crazy loon display.

Putting in at EP47 and am planning some day trips from where ever we find a site on Gaskin or Horseshoe. I've seen a couple of pictures of Omega and it looks like a nice lake. Is it worth my time to go see that lake on a day trip? Pictures and info would be appreciated!!
