They did great. I almost felt guilty for how easy it was compared to pulling sleds as we have done the past few years. It does add another level of activities and chores around camp however. But well worth it. I know of two mushers who has been going to knife so I sm guessing the trail is good. Our csbin is on moose and the boyscouts head down the lake that direction as well. Not sure if they go all the way to knife though.

quote Twinsplusone: "I was just did the Fall Lake and my Son and I took the Four Mile Portage to Hoist Bay. This was our first trip with our own dogs and luckily the trail conditions were ideal going in. Maybe 2 inches of very hard packed snow and the trails were nicely covered. We did have 3-5 inches of snow on 1-3-15 (Saturday) on our way out. I would guess that the trail would be packed again given the traffic it sees. I know our tracks would not be helpful given the amount of snow that was falling on Saturday. Ice was nice and smooth with about 13-16 inches on Hoist bay. We did see other mushers crossing the bay as well. Hope that helps."

What would you think the trail up to knife from moose lake would be like as far as the level of usage it has seen ? With the snow last week would you think they have a pretty decent trail to follow by now ? Congrats on the first trip. I bet you get a ton of gratification watching your dogs work after training them all summer.

Can anyone tell me what the snow conditions are on the Four Mile portage? Is there a packed trail? Also, is there much snow on the lakes (Fall & Basswood)? I'm hoping for easy pulling conditions as I am going solo and my toboggan will be a bit heavier than usual. I usually fish Back Bay but am interested in trying some Lake Trout fishing for the first time. Are there any parts of Basswwood where I would have a reasonable chance of catching Lake Trout or is Basswood not a good lake for Lake Trout. Thanks in advance for any replies.
