Did not go far into Howard Lake, as the adventure interest of my crew was quickly turning into a go fish at the dam interest, so can only say west end of Howard is shallow. Water was clear. Trail suggested not visited in past couple of years.
As far as a campsite goes, we saw one crew camped on north side of the inlet from Rawn Narrows towards its east end, near where the water grass wall was. Looked like a rocky point and I suspect it was rather buggy. Water is shallow there. It may mean something that as we paddled in, this crew was leaving the inlet and going south into Rawn Lake to have a day of fishing.

Thanks for the report. How far did you paddle into Howard lake? I was hoping to visit these lakes on my next trip but if they are shallow I think I will not visit them. Thanks again for your report.

Doc, thanks for the report, glad you made it. Did you see any signs of old campsites up in there? We're going in from French on 9/2 down Pickerel to the "B" lakes and/or Rawn/Buckingham and back. Definitely plan on fishing the dam area, but not trying for Howard. --Goose

Haven't been to Howard and now won't try. Thanks for the pioneer effort and report.
I will return to the B chain again and seeing he dam is drawing me back.

My crew made it into Howard Lake last week. Trail suggests not visited for a couple of years. We went east from Rawn Narrows to the end of the inlet and faced what looked like a solid water grass wall. We found a passage and wound back and forth without any beaver dams for about 20 min and then found a rapids spilling in from the north. A very unused trail ran up the east side, past several rapids and even a waterfall at the top. Estimate the total lake to lake water level difference to be 40 ft. Lots of ripe blueberries. Both Howard and the inlet below it are shallow and we had no fishing success there, even with weedless spoons.
Did catch lots of bass and walleye both above and below the Pickerel Dam.
