My McKenzie maps have many (all?) of the winter trails marked. Perhaps not all of these are current, or active. Perhaps you can let us know what you find out in comparison to those.

Thanks for all the info. Any new routes past what has been mentioned? Thanks much.

The main trails out of the ely area are:

Fall Lake to Basswood via 4mile portage

Moose lake to Basswood (through Found and Manomin)

Moose lake to Knife (through Ensign, Vera, and portage lakes) -- this route has a number of "winter portages" so check with the USDS before going

Snowbank to Ima (through dissapointment, muzzle, kobe, and alworth)

Snowbank to Thomas (through dissapointment, muzzle, Kobe, then through a drainage system into Thomas)

I would check with the USFS or talk with one of the local mushers that could mark them all on a map for you.

quote 2old4U: "Fourmile portage for sure!"
I agree, solid early year route (no pun intended)- at least 2 different outfits are bringing folks in and out all week long.

There are usually trails on Moose going to Knife and Basswood, and across Snowbank. I am not sure about up the Gunflint but there is a guy named Eric that does dogsledding out of Bearskin lodge. I want to check with him about a trip this winter.

Anyone know of any that get used every year?

Once I get a good listing of known trails I will add it to the Winter Entry Points thread.
