wingnut	11/09/2015 03:34PM It doesn't flare up it just glows till it burns through then goes out. Like you say it probably works as it was meant to but that's not what I thought it would do. The snow trekker mat looks good and not priced too bad either. I'll Google the welders blanket and see what I can find too.
Soledad	11/09/2015 01:10PM I use one of Snowtrekker's Hearths and it has held up for 3 years so far, no burn holes.
PortageKeeper	11/09/2015 11:43AM I'm guessing that your mat was never fireproof at all and was probably listed as fire resistant, which it probably is. Most treated mat'ls will let an ember burn through but the treatment is there to retard a flareup from happening. Some things are listed as fireproof that shouldn't be. I bought a ironing mat that I wanted to try for a stove mat. I tested it with a lighter and it burned like paper. The welding blanket as bn3 mentioned is probably the best you could do.

wingnut	11/09/2015 06:58AM I found out my fireproof mat that I use under my stove is not fireproof at all. It was supposed to be fire retardant treated canvas but the embers burn holes through it very quickly. What would be a good replacement. The fireplace rugs online are fairly pricey. I'm also surprised to see wool fireplace rugs.
