Im excited to go to the other side of the park for some beautiful waters and lakes I have yet to see. we have three weeks so we will go slow. Im looking forward to every moment with my boy. 05/06/2016 08:53AM Thank you so much Artic, Quetico is such a gift and every year I go there to show my loving respects, live in harmony with nature, and the I melts away into the we. It is a place that holds us and caresses and nurtures, stimulates, provokes, tantalizes, challenges, and allows for immense expansion of the soul. I have felt my sons eagerness and joy by its Majesty by him saying "dad are we going to Canada this year", "I want to go back to Canada". I live in Miami Fl. I drive the whole way, so we spend at least 3 weeks in bliss. I try to encourage others to get out into the wilderness and get grounded and be consumed by nature, rather than consuming things themselves. I think going into lonely lake as we come back around will be awesome. This is his third trip and I am excited for him because he seems to recall more and more and our campfire stories are expanding. Last year we found the skeleton on McKenzie and found a empty Loon egg and other beautiful special things on the islands. Every year it brings so many gifts. Everything is happening for us and not to us. I know I am writing a lot but it is just another expression of how special Quetico and many north country parks are. We all have our traditions. The Norske Nook in Wisconsin provide pies that sit in our hearts and keep us nourished, the stop at the tackle shop to get a special lure, getting to the border and honking the horn, and finally seeing the edge of the park. 05/05/2016 12:57PM I'm assuming that you will be coming down the Maligne River and getting into Poohbah Lake via Poohbah Creek. In normal water levels this is not a hard trip. In really high water the river becomes a bit of a problem, and in really low water the creek can be a nightmare. Neither of these scenarios is likely to occur during late June when you will be there. There are a couple of decent campsites along the W and NW shores of the main lake, and another couple on islands. They aren't hard to miss. If your 8-year old has been through the Cache Lake Portages, then he won't have any problem doing the Memory Lane Portages. The last couple of times I've been through there with my teenage son and our dog, we finished the three portages in about two hours (Poohbah to Conmee). We single portage all of our Quetico trips. As for the Death March Portages between Conmee and Delahey, the worst part is dealing with the beaver pond shallows/carry-overs between Conmee and the first long portage. Watch out for the hornet's nest in one of the old dams...got stung a few times last summer. The long portage isn't bad--just a fairly long walk. Not a big deal, unless you travel heavy or are there in very hot weather. Carry water on that stretch. The last portage into Delahey is a bit rocky and wet in spots, but not bad, IMO. Enjoy the message jar site on Delahey. Last summer there was a female spruce grouse on the campsite, along with her two chicks. In the unlikely even that you find that site taken, you might have to continue on to Veron Lake to find a decent site. Veron has at least two good sites from what I saw paddling through. Getting from Veron to Camel is pretty straight forward, and passes through some nicely recovering burn areas and scenic creek sections. I really like that area. You seem to know very well, like I do, that canoe tripping with with your son (and a dog) is one of the truly great things in life! Have fun! |

05/05/2016 10:30AM Hello Everybody, Got my permit for Beaver house (Quetico) entry point for June 24th and heading down through Sturgeon on our way to Poohbah. Staying 4 or 5 days and then onto Delayhey and Veron and Camel and around through maybe up through lonely or just cut through sturgeon again. With my son being the ripe age of 9 and our faithful puppy spirit we are going to go for almost 3 weeks. Does anyone have any pointers for this trip or great campsite locations. Ive done this area before but due to high water levels couldn't get to Poohbah or Delahey etc. Last year my 8 year old son and I went down through Cache and into Mckenzie, Kawinipi, around through Russell and back to Pickerel. What an amazing experience. I guess we are trying to enjoy the longer more scenic portages of the blissful wild. So any info. would be awesome thank you so much. Moosehopper |
