We were on the Granite River in July 2014. Water levels were fairly low at the time (low enough that we were scraping a dozen logs in Larch Creek on our way in) and we were able to shoot several of the rapids on a day trip from Clove to Gneiss. The small rapid leaving Clove is doable, but it is a sharp 90 degree turn in the middle of the rapid. If your front and back paddlers coordinate just right, it can work. If you are not experienced in rapids, take the portage--its short but muddy.

The first portage after passing Granite Lake is a must as the rapids following it are long, curved and will dump everyone but the most experienced whitewater paddlers. We canoed down to them, took one look at them and bushwacked our way around them. The remaining rapids to Gneiss are straight and not too challenging--we were able to shoot them all going down and were able to walk our canoes back up a few of them. Everyone loved shooting the rapids--it was the highlight of the trip.

When the water is high, all of these rapids will be much more challenging.

Haven't gone in this year and can't comment on water levels, but did go in last year to base camp on Maraboeuf. Had a great time. See the below thread if you're interested.

Has anyone gone in at Larch Creek (80) this year? I'm just curious about water levels because of the unusual winter we had. And did you go up the Granite River from Clove to Geneiss? I read a trip report where the "rapids" at 3 of 4 portages could be run, or at least you could walk your canoe through the "rapids" on the 3 shorter portages.
