I agree that the BH put-in is great for what you are looking for. That first portage from the car is quite easy, regardless of length.

A short portage from there into Quetico Lake (that portage is pretty easy too, and features an old car relic), and that lake gives you all manner of paths. The lake itself is big but spread out so it doesn't give you big-open-water in most places.

From Quetico, you can go to Conk and then Jean, also via short portages, with Jean being a great lake for fishing and camping (there are even some sand beaches) which itself connects to other paths. You can also go to Cirrus and Soho from there, which are also lakes with lots of space to explore, and portages into them are short. Those aren't loops, but you'll have plenty of space to explore.

Maybe my memory is not good (maybe?) but the S-Chain and other lakes between Agnes and Kashapiwi seem like mostly short portages (staying out of Kashapiwi). Just have to cross Bayley. Man Chain and loop back along border on Q side has always interested me.

I'd like to find some smaller lakes as when we were on Pickerel headed to the dam it was a windy day and the water was choppy. My wife did not care for that. She prefers the smaller lakes after that day.

Well they have it messed up on several maps then as it shows 600 rods on one and 1080 yards on another map."

The portage from the Beaverhouse parking lot to the put-in spot is a flat, easy 1/3 mile walk. Roughly 100 rods.

Here's what it looks like.

With that said, you should consider a trip up to Brent Lake. Enter at PP and meander your way up there. If you REALLY wanted to do it, you could get there in a day. Otherwise it's two easy days of paddling and portaging. Spend a couple days on Brent, then head south out the west end of Brent to the small lakes (can't remember all, but I know Cone, Elk, Gardner Bay are a few), on to Crooked and back via Basswood. There are at least a couple different ways to head south from Brent, including through Ted and Robinson.

The portage from Beaverhouse near the ranger station is short into Quetico Lake, a lake you can go a long ways in with many outlets and bays. A short portage can take you up to Cirrus Lake. My crew did this the year before you went with us. Some of this is big water and you can possibly get wind bound if not crossing in early morning. Quetico Lake can also allow you to connect east or south depending on how much portaging you two want to do.

I'm looking for some suggested loops that have some short portage lengths to them (less than 500 yards) to do next year with my wife. This year we did the B chain loop. I was thinking of going in at Beaverhouse although that starts out right from the parking lot with a lengthy portage of 600 rods. Any good loops down South thru PP or CB entry points. Looking for something that would be about a week long.
