I used to use these for when I worked on National Ski Patrol at a local ski resort. They will work on both gloves and mittens. They hold up well as I used them to protect my gloves and mittens from getting worn thru from the rope tow rope. I could usually get about 2 seasons of use out of these. If you got these you could use them on whatever pair of mitts or gloves you need. Glove protectors

I use Military surplus mitts with a couple of sewing mods, treat leather and lightly wax canvas. $25/pair.
I buy those so that we can afford Empire Canvas mitts for my wife.

That is what I have but the gauntlet does not fit over my coat sleeves. Since the pair I have are quite old I will take a look but I would prefer a cotton canvas and leather shell so I can work around a fire. Thanks.

Wintergreen also sells some shell mitts at different prices. Although they are a cordura fabric.

I don't know if you're handy but I made mine out of deerskin. It allowed me to make them to my personal taste and gave me something to do in my spare time; as well as using up some scraps of leather I had lying around at the time.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

Frost River makes a nice pair.

There's always an exception to the rule. I bet that lesson hurt a bit.

I once lost a $1000 camera and a cell phone on a local river. "I'll never dump that canoe", says I. Famous last words.

My first choice would be Empire Wool and Canvas, but I noticed that you seemed to shy away from them due to price and availability. Then you said you wanted to support small shops. Well, you can't get much smaller than Empire. They are indeed not cheap, but they are top of the line in quality. They may be expensive, but when you buy quality equipment, you only pay for it once.

Here is another option.

I have a pair of Empire True North mittens. I lost a pair on 4-mile portage a couple years ago, and did not hesitate 1 minute to buy another pair.
You get what you pay for. Plus they are MADE LOCALLY! SUPPORT THAT!

If you would like to make your own well then support these two wonderful humans!

After posting this question I thought that maybe that would be the way I end up going as a simple search started to pop up used military gear. Thanks for the link

I would still like input from people as I like to support the small shops if at all possible.

I'm looking for suggestions on an non insulated mitten shell I can put my wool mittens into. Currently I have a very old shell (nylon) but they don't fit over sleeves as they are a tad small if trying to fit over the bigger sleeves like if one is wearing an Empire Anorak over a wool shirt.

Ideally it would be something with at least a leather palm and a canvas shell. I know Empire makes mittens but they tend to be expensive and delayed in delivery.

Suggestions?

Thanks.
