We're hiking the park Saturday and staying at one of the sites. Looks like we will have a decent day and a cool 32 degree night. I won't tell the wife about that last part. :-)

I'm looking for suggestions on where to hike in the park and what to see? Thanks.

Definitely go see the cascades. My daughter and I stayed at sight 5 last October for two nights. Nice site, open, right on the river. If you are into big birch trees the yellow birch trail is good too.

There is a short loop around Benson Lake that is nice.

At this time a year, with all the leaves off, the hike on the Superior Hiking Trail from Crosby to Caribou Fall Wayside would be good, with a couple of views of Lake Superior from the trail.

Or take the hike from Crosby on the Superior Trail the other way. I know that within a mile or two there is a good view of Lake Superior from the trail.

Have a great time. That is one of my favorite parks in the system. You can't go wrong with and trail you take.

We entered the park in the early afternoon after lunch. The gates were closed so we parked with 5 other vehicles at the information kiosk. There was still snow on the ground in areas.

Our hike out was tough with lots of water on the trail so we hopped around lots of swamped areas. We ignored a sign leading to our site #5 because I thought we didn't have to use the river trail. After finding a split in the Superior hiking trail we back tracked down and back up the ridge we needed to return.
At the river we found 2 Coleman sleeping bags left by someone along with some rope. It was disheartening to find items like that in a hiking park.

The campsite trail was flooded out by the river in one spot so we billy goated our way on the side of the hill. I was relieved to get to our campsite.

The river was deafening as it was very high. We found a flattish spot for our tent and setup. Someone left some cut wood under the bench by the fire ring.

The site was mostly clean but some idiot left a 5 gallon bucket with a large pot inside, a small pot inside that and a large can of baked beans. Under all that was more stuff inside the bucket I only glanced at. Next to it was an indoor floor rug. Theses items were there over the winter. I will contact Tettegouche when I have time about what we found. We were not in any shape able to haul all that we found in the park. We cleaned up small items like a child's thong slipper and bear rope and hauled those out the next day.

We enjoyed our night by the fire and went to bed early. We really are not in shape for the hike we had but we made it.

We had a hard frost followed by rain that lasted quite a while. It warmed the air overnight. Thankfully the rain stopped by morning. Breakfast was bars and tea. After that we took down camp and packed. Our hike out was uneventful. My wife was sorry to leave a stick she found in the park and used as her hiking stick but she did. Great time outdoors.

As usual I learned what not to and what to bring next time. Bring light weight vest, leave heavy wool/fleece coat and bring down coat instead. We're not ultra light hikers by any means but I try to keep extra items and weight to a minimum. I have to fight the "be prepared for any emergency " mindset.

Glad you had a great time, bummer about the trash, some people just don't get it. Thanks for the report.

It really is too bad how many people trash state parks.
