This weekend is the first trip of the year. Going on SHT from Tettegouche to Silver Bay. Two nights out, about 12 miles. The gear is out, the food is dried, the maps are printed and the GPS is ready.

My boys, our dog and I will be going with my girlfriend, we will see how she does on her first trip! I'm going to keep her pack as light as I can and bring along a bladder of wine.

I can't wait.

Keep safe and dry this weekend, nasty ice storm preceeded by rain and perhaps followed by snow.

Watch those slippery rocks and surfaces. Expect flooded trails, that's what we found. Hope you packed enough warm clothes and coats.

Have a great time.

Anyone know of current conditions? I know it was bad earlier, but is it terrible now?

there was no school today in grand marais or tofte. the Boreal.org weather alert says the winter storm watch is in effect until Thursday morning.
try calling a business near where you're planning to travel and perhaps even the DNR to ask if camping in that state park is advised.

Thanks Mocha. Good idea.

The Tettegouche State Park said it is muddy in places but that otherwise it will be OK.

We'll take along some lightweight nylon pants. We'll wear them in the mud and remove them when we camp so that the mud is managed.

It was a little chilly, a lot muddy, and a bunch of fun.

The long stretches of mud weren't my favorite. My boys don't have the patience they should have about managing the mud. My dog doesn't understand avoiding mud and was happily muddy on her legs and belly.

The scenery was good. No bugs. Good exercise.
