Does the use of a bottom and top quilt make a sleeping bag obsolete, and do quilts fit differently from hammock to hammock??

Yes. Yes. What type of hammock are you using and is it your long term hammock?

Yes, the top quilt replaces your sleeping bag and your bottom quilt replaces your air mattress. The top quilt will have the same fit and function regardless of the hammock used. I don't think a bridge hammock takes a different bottom quilt, but I don't own a bridge hammock so I haven't researched that particular issue. Final note, invest in down not synthetic.

I am going to order a Chameleon from Dutch. It looks and appears to be a pretty sweet set up. Need advice though on an under quilt, was planning on getting a Backcountry quilt from Sierra Designs... As a top quilt.

Honestly, I would go with the well respected cottage vendors out there when it comes to quilts. Check out Underground Quilts , Enlightened Equipment and Hammock Gear. I have products from each of them and they are all excellent quality. Hammock Gear's Econ quilts were introduced a few months ago and are a real game changer as far as price points go. I would personally recommend the Incubator Econ 20 underquilt and the Burrow Econ 30 top quilt for hanging spring through fall.

look at these two synthetic quilt, the jarbidge uq, 3 season aroung $100, and the white cloud tops quilt, around $170. these are 2 very nice pieces of warm hammock gear. i have had them down to 25 degrees, no problem. since i do not winter camp, for the money it was a win. paul from kickassquilts.com, puts out great hammock gear.
they fit dutch's hammocks very nicely.

yes, i use dutch's hex tarp. it has low stretch. as a backup i take along a hennessy poly tarp, for around $70.00. i've had it for 8 years, good tarp, low stretch, plenty of coverage.
